Charlotte Eagles News Release
Charlotte, NC -- The Charlotte Eagles continue their 2014 US Open Cup run with a 3rd round matchup against the Carolina RailHawks on Wed, May 28th at 7:30 pm.
The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is America's longest running national soccer tournament as well as being the third-longest-running soccer tournament in the world.
Charlotte began their tournament with a 3-1 victory over the PDL's Carolina Dynamo on Wednesday, May 14th. Juan Guzman opened the scoring for the hosts in the 43rd minute after taking a pass from Jorge Herrera. Herrera increased the home-side's advantage in the 57th minute with a beautiful, looping volley over the Dynamo keeper from just inside the edge of the penalty area. Jorge Herrera's brace came late in the game as Eagles goalkeeper Brock Duckworth sent a booming drop kick towards the Dynamo goal before being collected and slotted home by the Colombian.
The RailHawks will begin their US Open Cup run this round by hosting the Eagles. In the 2013 US Open Cup the RailHawks advanced to the Quarterfinals by beating MLS sides LA Galaxy and Chivas USA before succumbing to Real Salt Lake.
The winner of Wednesday's contest will host Major League Soccer's Chivas USA. If the Eagles win they will host Chivas at Davidson College on Tuesday, June 17th at 7 pm. If the RailHawks emerge victorious they will host on June 14th.
