Match Preview: Sacramento Republic FC V Fresno Fuego

Sacramento Republic FC hosts the Fresno Fuego in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup third round play on Wednesday, May 28 at Cosumnes River College Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with gates opening at 6:30 pm.

Both clubs entered the U.S. Open Cup in the second round after receiving first round byes. Republic FC defeated the Ventura County Fusion 2-1 in their first Open Cup match on May 14. Fresno beat the Orange County Blues 2-0 in their second round matchup.

Republic FC enters the match after defeating both the Rochester Rhinos and Dayton Dutch Lions FC over the weekend to extend their USL PRO win streak to four and their overall win streak to five. The road wins were the third and fourth of the season for Republic FC which ties them with Orlando City SC for most in the USL PRO.

Forward Thomas Stewart scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season on Friday against Rochester. Stewart has scored in each of his last three USL PRO matches and was named to the USL PRO Team of the Week.

Goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek was also named to the USL PRO Team of the Week following his performances over the weekend. Jakubek recorded his second shutout of the season on Friday against Rochester and then had four saves while conceding just one goal on a penalty kick against Dayton. Jakubek upped his record to 4-2-0 on the year and lowered his goals against average to 0.89.

Fresno enters the match on a two-match win streak after defeating the San Jose Earthquakes U-23 PDL team on May 23. Fresno is lead by midfielder Jose Cuevas who has recorded an assist and a goal in three PDL matches this season. Cuevas also scored a goal against the Orange County Blues FC in their U.S. Open Cup match on May 14. Goalkeeper Francisco Hernandez recorded a shutout while collecting 8 saves in the match against the Earthquakes U-23s, his first appearance of the season.

The winner of the match will take on the San Jose Earthquakes in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup on June 11. The match will be held at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco and is scheduled to kickoff at 7:30 pm.

Republic FC head coach Predrag "Preki" Radosavljeviæ will be suspended for the match, serving the second of a two match U.S. Open Cup suspension stemming from an incident in 2009 while he was head coach of Chivas USA. Assistant Coach Rod Underwood will lead the squad from the sideline.
