Staley Records 1,000th Assist
Dawn Staley recorded her 1,000th career WNBA assist on a pass to Tammy Sutton-Brown at the 15:56 mark of the second half in the game against Connecticut on September 1. She joins Teresa Weatherspoon and Ticha Penicheiro as the only players to have recorded 1,000 assists in their WNBA careers.
Staley Continues To Shine
After having led Team USA to a gold medal in Athens, guard Dawn Staley continues to shine on the court for the Sting. In the last three games, Staley has averaged 13.7 points and 5.0 assists for the Sting.
Staley is currently shooting a career-best 45.7% (91-199) from the floor and 42.9% (21-49) from the three-point line. She is ranked 10th in the league in field goal percentage and is the only guard listed among the top ten leaders. She also ranks sixth in the league in three-point field goal percentage.
Smith-Taylor Playing Well
In the three games since the Olympic break, Charlotte Smith-Taylor has averaged 12.7 points on 57.7% (15-26) shooting from the field along with 4.7 rebounds for the Sting.
Race for the Eastern Conference Title
The race for the Eastern Conference crown remains tight. New York sits atop the standings with a 14-13 record. Indiana is a half game back at 15-15. Connecticut and Detroit are tied for third with 14-15 records. Charlotte is a half game out of a playoff position with a 13-15 record. Washington is in last place just two and a half games out of first place with a 12-16 record.
Patriot Night
The Sting will host Patriot Night on Saturday, September 11 as they face the Minnesota Lynx. The first 2,500 fans will receive car flags courtesy of Wachovia. As part of the festivities, the renowned Spring Valley High School drill team will perform at halftime. In addition, members of the police department, fire department and representatives from all branches of the military will be on hand with displays and interactive activities.
