The Sun took advantage of a 17-2 run to end the game as they handed the Sting a 64-55 loss at the Charlotte Coliseum. With the score tied at 38 with 12:59 left in the game, the Sting used an 11-4 run to build a seven-point lead. Following a jump shot by Sheri Sam at the 5:55 mark, the Sting made only one field goal to end the game. Allison Feaster scored 14 points to lead the Sting. Katie Douglas scored 15 to pace four Sun players in double figures.

The Sting held a six-point lead in the second half but couldn't sustain the lead as they fell to the Sun 63-73 in the second half of a home and home series. With the score tied at 30 at halftime, the Sting opened the second period with a 13-7 run. The Sun, behind nine points from Nykesha Sales, went on a 26-8 run to push the score to 63-51. Sales finished with 21 points while Lindsay Whalen added 14. Dawn Staley recorded 15 points and seven assists while Tammy Sutton-Brown earned a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for Charlotte.

The Sting shot a season-low 27.3% (15-55) from the field as they suffered a 17-point loss to the Indiana Fever. The Fever used a 19-5 run over an 8:32 stretch in the first half to build a 13-point lead on the Sting. Indiana took advantage of another run (10-1) midway through the second half to help them extend their lead to 17. Jurgita Streimikyte and Ebony Hoffman led the way for the Fever with 13 points each. Tammy Sutton-Brown led the Sting with 13 points while Sheri Sam posted 10.

STING NEWS AND NOTES

WEST COAST TRIP

The Sting embark on a three-game road stretch this week as they travel to Sacramento and Seattle. The Monarchs have the best record in the Western Conference at 14-7 and are led by All-Stars Yolanda Griffith and DeMya Walker. Former Sting players Nicole Powell, Erin Buescher and Olympia Scott also contribute.

It marks the return to Sacramento for Sting forward Tangela Smith, who spent the first seven seasons of her WNBA career with the Monarchs.

Sting guard Sheri Sam returns to Seattle later in the week for the first time since helping the Storm capture the 2004 WNBA Championship.

UPCOMING STING EVENTS

Aug. 4 Thirsty Thursday - The Sting will offer half price beer specials throughout the Coliseum. Fans can also log onto charlottesting.com to receive a special $5 ticket offer.

Aug. 6 Back To School Night - The first 2,500 fans will receive a backpack courtesy of Staples and Shoe Show. A special guest from Disney will also be on hand to help promote the importance of reading.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Tuesday, July 26 vs. Sacramento 10 p.m. - ARCO Arena

The Sting head out west to face the Sacramento Monarchs for the first time this season. Sacramento currently sits atop the Western Conference standings with a 14-7 record. The Monarchs are led by two All-Star post players, DeMya Walker and Yolanda Griffith. Walker averages 14.7 points and 5.7 rebounds while Griffith posts 13.5 points and 6.7 rebounds. Former Sting player Nicole Powell also averages in double figures for the Monarchs with 10.2 points. In 2004, the two teams split the season series with each team winning on their home floor.

Friday, July 29 - vs. Seattle 10:00 p.m. - Key Arena

The Sting continue their road swing with a stop in Seattle to face the Storm. Seattle holds a 1-0 lead in the season series. In the first meeting between the two teams, Seattle narrowly defeated the Charlotte 62-60. Sheri Sam paced the Sting with 14 points while Tangela Smith added 12. Lauren Jackson recorded a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Storm. Jackson leads the team in scoring and rebounding averaging 17.8 points and 9.5 rebounds. Betty Lennox and Sue Bird also post double figure scoring averages for the Storm. Lennox averages 12.8 points while Bird averages 11.9 points along with a team-high 5.8 assists.

PASSING FANCY

This week, Staley goes head to head with two other point guards who have a flair for passing the rock. Staley, Ticha Penicheiro and Sue Bird represent three eras and rank as several of the best point guards in women's basketball history. Fittingly, all three players again rank among WNBA assist leaders in 2005.

In each of her seven seasons in the WNBA, Staley has posted at least one game of 10+ assists.

SUMMER CAMPS

The Sting will be part of two basketball camps this summer, Bickerstaff's Triple Double Camp and the Dell Curry/Charlotte Bobcats and Sting Basketball Camp. Bickerstaff's Triple Double Camp will be held July 26-30 at the Bobcats Basketball Center while the Dell Curry/Charlotte Bobcats and Sting Camp will be held August 15-19 at the Levine Jewish Community Center. STING ON TV

The Sting at Washington game on August 2 will be broadcast on ESPN 2 at 8 p.m.

WJZY UPN-46 will also broadcast the Sting's season finale against the Connecticut Sun on Saturday, July 27 at 6 p.m.
