
Becky Hammon of the New York Liberty Named WNBA Player of the Week

NEW YORK, JULY 25 - Becky Hammon of the New York Liberty was named the WNBA Player of the Week for her play in New York's three victories last week. It is the first WNBA Player of the Week honor for Hammon.
Hammon, a 2005 WNBA All-Star, started the week on July 19 with an 18-point, three-steal effort in New York's 87-78 loss to the Seattle Storm. On July 21, Hammon led all scorers with 21 points, while dishing out five assists and going 3-for-5 from behind the three point line as the Liberty defeated the Phoenix Mercury, 80-70. The next night, Hammon finished with 15 points and four assists in helping New York to a 73-63 victory over the Sacramento Monarch's. Hammon finished the week by scoring 13 points, including 11 in the final five minutes, to lead the Liberty over the Minnesota Lynx, 59-47. It was the third straight road victory for New York and has helped catapult the Liberty into third place in the Eastern Conference.
Hammon is currently ranked 14th in scoring (13.8), fifth in assists (4.7), tied for second in steals (2.10), second in free-throw percentage (.905) and 16th in three-point field goal percentage (.387).
Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Connecticut's Nykesha Sales, Detroit's Cheryl Ford, Houston's Sheryl Swoopes, Indiana's Jurgita Streimikyte, Los Angeles' Tamika Whitmore, Phoenix's Penny Taylor, Sacramento's Kara Lawson and Washington's Alana Beard.
The 2005 WNBA All-Star Game, which was played in front of a sellout crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena, saw the highest scoring game in WNBA history and culminated with a slam dunk by veteran All-Star Lisa Leslie. The ABC telecast reached more international viewers than ever as it was broadcast in 193 countries by 52 telecasters in 31 languages allowing the league's global fan base to witness all the action.
