
Charlie Manuel Added To Caravan Lineup

(Allentown, Pa.) - The Philadelphia Phillies have announced that Manager Charlie Manuel will be a guest of honor at the 2010 Phillies Caravan presented by The Air Products Foundation on Jan. 27 at Billera Hall on the campus of DeSales University. Manuel, the runner-up for National League Manager of the year in 2007-08 has been added to the an expanding lineup that includes newly-signed catcher and Lehigh Valley native Brian Schneider, Phillies Assistant General Manager Chuck Lamar and Phillies Director of Public Affairs, Scott Palmer serves as the host of the event.
The main program for Phillies Caravan consists of dinner and an open bar, a sports memorabilia silent auction, raffles and an entertainment portion with the special Phillies guests. Tickets are $80 per person or $725.00 for a table of ten. Championship tables, allowing patrons entrance to a private pre-event reception and the opportunity to mingle with event VIP's are also available.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour and commencement of the auctions and raffles. Seat or table reservations are now on sale and available by calling (610) 841-PIGS. Interested parties are reminded that seating is limited and Phillies Caravan has sold out each of the last two years.
Manuel, 66, was named as the 51st manager of the Philadelphia Phillies on Nov. 4, 2004, and guided the Phillies to just their second World Championship in franchise history during their memorable 2008 campaign. He has piloted the Phillies to the postseason for three consecutive seasons and in 2009 led them to the World Series for a second consecutive year for the first time in their 127-year history. A native of North Fork, WV, Manuel was the Cleveland Indians manager from 2000-2002 and led the Tribe to the American League Central Division title in 2001. During parts of eight Major League seasons, Manuel's teams have gone an impressive 575-483 (.543) and posted winning records on seven occasions.
Schneider, a 1995 graduate of nearby Northampton High School was recently signed to a two-year contract by the Phillies. The 33-year-old hit.218 with three home runs and 18 RBI in 59 games last season for the New York Mets while throwing out nine of 28 (32%) potential base stealers. Since making his Major League debut in 2000, Schneider has thrown out 183 base runners, which is the most for any N.L. catcher.
Originally selected by Montreal in the fifth round of the 1995 draft, Schneider has spent his entire career in the N.L. East. In 926 career Major League games with Montreal/Washington (2000-07) and New York-NL (2008-09), he is a.251 hitter with 59 home runs and 356 RBI.
A community advocate, Schneider was named the Expos' 2002 Roberto Clemente Award winner, recognizing community service and also founded the "Catching the Kids Foundation," with his wife, Jordan, to help underprivileged children on the national level.
The 2009 season was Chuck LaMar's second with the Phillies and first as Assistant General Manager, Player Development and Scouting. He originally joined the Phillies on Oct. 25, 2007, as the Director of Pro Scouting. In his current role, he manages the Phillies' Minor League system and contributes to amateur scouting. For 10 years -- from their inception in 1995 through the 2005 season -- LaMar was the General Manager of Tampa Bay and, under his guidance, the Rays drafted and developed such players as Carl Crawford, Rocco Baldelli, Delmon Young and B.J. Upton.
Last year's event raised $45,000 for IronPigs Charities, a non-profit organization striving to provide educational and recreational opportunities for children in the Greater Lehigh Valley area.
Phillies Caravan beneficiary IronPigs Charities is a recognized 501(c) (3) non-profit organization on the state and federal level. The Caravan is one of the key fundraising efforts for IronPigs Charities and has single-handedly raised over $70,000 over the last two years.
An extremely limited number of 2010 All-Star ticket packages, consisting of tickets to "Pigapalooza" All-Star Fan Fest (Saturday, July 10 at Coca-Cola Park), the Triple-A Home Run Derby (Monday, July 12) and the Triple-A All-Star Game (Wednesday, July 14), are now on sale to existing and new full-season ticket holders, 36-game holders and 18-game partial plan holders that renew or purchase season tickets and the All-Star Game package.
