Charleston heads to Atlanta for first road test

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery heads to Atlanta Saturday for its first road game of the season versus the Atlanta Silverbacks (CNN 1450, 7:45 PM). The Battery has played five consecutive games at home, winning twice, losing once and tieing two games. Charleston enters the game in 7th position in the USL First Division with 8 points.

The Battery and the Silverbacks played to a 0-0 tie last Saturday night in a game played at Blackbaud Stadium; Charleston goalkeeper Keith Wiggans recorded six saves to preserve the shut-out. This Saturday's game is the 34th all time meeting between Charleston and Atlanta; the Battery leads the series with 17 wins, 11 losses and 5 ties.

Saturday's game is the inaugural match at the Atlanta Silverbacks new soccer-specific stadium, Atlanta Silverbacks Park. The new stadium has a 3,500 capacity with plans to eventually expand it to 15,000.

Atlanta is led by second-year head coach Jason Smith. Smith guided the Silverbacks to a record of 10-15-3 in 2005; he previously coached Piedmont College and is the current President of Gwinnett Futbol Club.

Atlanta's roster includes former Charleston Battery midfielder Josh Smith. Smith spent the last two seasons with the Battery; he played 45 games with 2 goals and 1 assist.

All Charleston Battery away games are carried live on CNN 1450 AM, the Charleston Battery's new radio broadcast partner. Pre-game Saturday will start at 7:30 PM with kick off set for 7:45 PM. All games are also available via webcast at www.charlestonbattery.com.

Watson named to USL First Division Team of the Week

Charleston Battery defender Mark Watson has been named to the USL First Division Team of the Week following his strong defensive showing in last Saturday's 0-0 tie with Atlanta. Watson led the Battery to its second shut-out of the season; he has played every minute of every game so far this season.

Jamaican Update

The Charleston Battery's two Jamaican internationals Shane Crawford and Omar Daley will not be available on Saturday as they play for Jamaica vs England in an international friendly being played in Manchester, UK. The game is being televised live in the US on FOX Soccer Channel, kick off is set for 9 AM. Shane Crawford played 90 minutes in Jamaica's 4-1 loss to Ghana last Monday; Crawford was credited with an assist on the lone Jamaica goal.
