Charleston Battery News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Battery are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Adam Grinwis (grin-wiss) to the 2024 roster on Thursday, pending league and federation approval.
Grinwis, 31, arrives in Charleston with years of experience and trophies won in both Major League Soccer and the USL Championship.
"The history of success at the club, the coaching staff, and the city of Charleston drew me to joining the club," said Grinwis. "Once I spoke with coaches Ben Pirmann and Brian Jones, I knew Charleston was a perfect fit for me and my family."
Grinwis most recently played for MLS outfit Orlando City SC, from 2018-19 and 2021-23, appearing in 11 matches for The Lions. The shot-stopper gained popularity for his heroics in the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with two saves in the penalty shootout against New York City FC to advance to the semifinals. He also helped Orlando lift the Open Cup trophy in 2022.
In the USL Championship, Grinwis previously played for the Rochester Rhinos, Saint Louis FC, Real Monarchs and Sacramento Republic. Grinwis' rookie campaign with the Rhinos culminated in winning the league title over LA Galaxy II.
Head Coach Ben Pirmann is looking forward to what Grinwis brings to the squad.
"Adam is a very athletic and experienced goalkeeper," said Coach Pirmann. "He's a tremendous leader and is all-in to help the Battery win. Adam has very good reflexes and the ability to make high-end saves, along with being very good with his feet to help build the game from the back."
In joining Charleston, Grinwis reconnects with assistant coach Brian Jones, who was Grinwis' goalkeeper coach for Saint Louis in 2017.
"I loved working with Coach Jones at Saint Louis back in 2017," said Grinwis. "He brought out the strong side of my game that allowed me to evolve and advance in my career. He's no-nonsense and pushes his goalkeepers to be great every day. I'm so grateful we're working together again and I know his coaching will bring out the best in me."
Grinwis is a native of Ada, Mich., and played collegiately at the University of Michigan, where he garnered numerous all-conference honors. He additionally featured for the Michigan Bucks from 2012 to 2014 in the USL PDL (now 'USL League Two'), earning PDL Goalkeeper of the Year and Rookie of the Year before winning the PDL title and being named the title game's MVP.
Grinwis is looking to add to the success the Battery had in 2023.
"I'm thrilled to be joining a group with a winning mindset as well as a team-first culture," said Grinwis. "With the team, I'm looking forward to growing every day, fighting for championships and ultimately bringing trophies to the city of Charleston."
