Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Art Charles homered for the second consecutive day, but the Clearwater Threshers suffered an 18-2 loss at the hands of the first-place Daytona Cubs on Thursday night.
Daytona (27-17) exploded for six runs in the second inning and would not look back from there.
Mark Leiter Jr. had made quick work of the Cubs in the first inning, striking out two while setting the side down in order.
Leiter (2-3) would walk Dan Vogelbach on a payoff pitch to open the second, and a single and walk with one out loaded the bases. Jordan Hankins got the game's first run home with a single to center, and two more came across when the ball was misplayed by Roman Quinn in center for an error.
After a strikeout of Gioskar Amaya, Jacob Hannemann singled to put two men on, and Marco Hernandez knocked home a run with a base hit of his own. 2014 first-round draft pick Kyle Schwarber followed with a two-run single to make it 6-0 Cubs and end the day for Leiter.
The Cubs would continue to tack on throughout, including a seven-run fifth inning which boosted their advantage to 14-0.
Clearwater (20-27) broke the shutout in the bottom half.
Cubs starter Tayler Scott (7-8) had permitted just one hit through the first four innings, but Brian Pointer opened the bottom of the fifth by pulling a single through the right side.
With one out and Pointer at first, Charles ripped a 2-2 offering that landed beyond the palm trees out to right for his team-leading 14th bomb of the season.
Daytona tacked on a run in the sixth and one more in the seventh, before wrapping up the offensive outpouring with two in the ninth.
Herlis Rodriguez finished with half of the Threshers' four hits, going 2-for-3. His single to right in the third inning was his first in a Clearwater uniform.
The Threshers will try to salvage the finale against Daytona on Friday, when the series concludes at 6:30 p.m. Jordan Guth (2-3) toes the rubber for Clearwater opposed by Daytona's Jose Rosario (4-7). The call can be heard live on the Threshers' broadcast network beginning at 6:15 p.m.
