CFL Canadian Football League

CFL names players of the week

Published on October 5, 2004 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Offensive Player of the Week

RB – Kenton Keith #28

Saskatchewan Roughriders

Highlights

Keith rushed the ball 17 times for 146 yards (8.6 yards per carry), his longest carry was 59 yards and he had two (2) touchdowns.

Game Notes:

Keith ran roughshod over the best team in the League against the rush. He has an excellent combination of size and speed;big enough to withstand punishment, but once he breaks through a hole, he is gone!

Keith has a great deal of confidence and ability, with a "presence" that has acted as a determining factor in the resurgence of the Roughriders.

1st Runner Up: Milt Stegall #85, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

2nd Runner Up: Jason Clermont #82, BC Lions

Judge: Bob Krouse

Defensive Player of the Week

DB – Malcolm Frank #10

Edmonton Eskimos

Highlights

Frank made eight (8) defensive tackles and returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown, his fifth of the season, setting a CFL record.

Game Notes:

Frank set a CFL record for touchdowns scored from interception returns in a single season – FIVE. The record was previously held (since 1978) by a former Eskimos player, Joe Hollimon,.

Frank's speed and coverage skills give him the ability to change a game on one play. Opposing quarterbacks would be smart to stay away from him as the race for a playoff birth tightens.

1st Runner Up: Santino Hall #18, Saskatchewan Roughriders

2nd Runner Up: Mike O'Shea #50, Toronto Argonauts

Judge: Bob Krouse

Lineman of the Week

DE – Joe Montford #53

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Highlights

Joe Montford had three (3) defensive tackles, one (1) of which was a tackle for a loss – 16 yards. He also had one (1) pass knockdown and three (3) quarterback sacks.

Game Notes:

Montford gave "a clinic" on pass rush, as he used speed rushes to the outside with change-ups to the inside to beat the blocker. He was outstanding!

Montford was probably motivated by the presence of Hall of Fame inductees for 2004. He is a favourite to be a Hall of Famer one day, but for now his goal is to help Hamilton secure a playoff birth.

1st Runner Up: Tyrone Williams #96, BC Lions

2nd Runner Up: Jeremy O'Day #54, Saskatchewan Roughriders

Judge: Bob Krouse

Special Teams Player of the Week

KR/WR – Bashir Levingston #23

Toronto Argonauts

Highlights

Levingston had a kickoff return for eight (8) yards and three (3) punt returns for 97 yards - the longest for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Game Notes:

This was Levingston's first game back after suffering an injury and he returned to his special teams role with a "bang". He returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown. This was his ninth touchdown kick return as an Argonaut; he broke the previous club record for TD kick returns set by his coach Michael "Pinball" Clemons.

Levingston has the youth and ability to attack the CFL all-time regular season punt return touchdowns records set by Henry "Gizmo" Williams (28).

1st Runner Up: Jason Goss #27, Hamilton Tiger-Cats

2nd Runner Up: Arland Bruce III #5, Toronto Argonauts

Judge: Bob Krouse
