CFL Canadian Football League

CFL names players of the month

Published on November 4, 2004 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Offensive Player of the Month

RB - Kenton Keith #28

Saskatchewan Roughriders

Highlights

During October, Keith rushed for 337 yards on 42 carries, reaching the end zone three times.

Game Notes:

Keith's explosive running style combined with outstanding cut-back skills made him unstoppable at times. He was most dominant during Weeks 16 and 17 when he was named Rogers CFL Offensive Player of the Week. I was most impressed with his knack to avoid direct, head-on tackles and his big play ability.

1st Runner Up: QB - Anthony Calvillo #13, Montreal Alouettes

2nd Runner Up: RB - Joffrey Reynolds #32, Calgary Stampeders

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Defensive Player of the month

DB - Malcolm Frank #10

Edmonton Eskimos

Highlights

This month, Frank had 23 tackles and one 45-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Game Notes:

Frank had a major role in the tough Eskimos defensive backfield. He played intense, all-out football and was not afraid to stick his nose in the action. For me, the most impressive part of his game was the month-long game awareness he showed. Frank was always in position and he made plays.

1st Runner Up: DB - Donny Brady #26, Edmonton Eskimos

2nd Runner Up: LB - Michael O'Shea #50, Toronto Argonauts

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Lineman of the month

DE - Joe Montford #53

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Highlights

Montford had nine tackles, one pass knockdown and six quarterback sacks for the month of October.

Game Notes:

Montford gets a lot of attention because of his sack totals and the pressure he puts on quarterbacks. Last month he displayed sound defensive line play and showed quickness, hustle and power. Montford really went after his opponents.

1st Runner Up: BL - Jeremy O'Day #54, Saskatchewan Roughriders

2nd Runner Up: DT - Tyrone Williams #96, BC Lions

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Special Teams Player of the month

KR - Bashir Levingston #23

Toronto Argonauts

Highlights

In October, Levingston had 210 yards for kickoff returns and 36 yards for punt returns with one touchdown. He also had 115-yard missed field goal return for a touchdown.

Game Notes:

They say speed kills and Levingston certainly has a lot of speed. He also has explosive moves and was a threat to break games open or to alter momentum at any time with a long kick return. His outstanding work played a major role in two Argo wins last month.

1st Runner Up: KR - Craig Yeast #5, Hamilton Tiger-Cats

2nd Runner Up: KR - Arland Bruce #5, Toronto Argonauts

Judge: Ellison Kelly
