Central Illinois Flying Aces News Release
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Central Illinois Flying Aces fall to the Madison Capitols, 4 to 3, in Martin Luther King, Jr. Day matinee game.
Tate Singleton (West Lebanon, NH) struck first for the Flying Aces, 10:17 into the first. Stephen Halliday (Toronto, Ont.) won a board battle near the defensive blue line and took the puck past two Madison players and into the offensive zone. The University of North Dakota commit threaded the puck through to Singleton. Singleton backhanded the puck top-shelf over the goaltender's glove.
Mitchell Gibson (Phoenixville, Penn.) was steady in net for the Aces through the first two periods. The Washington Capitals prospect stopped a short-handed breakaway by Madison late in the second period to maintain the Central Illinois lead.
Fifteen seconds into the third period, Connor Mayer (Champlin, Minn.) rimmed the puck around to Michael Ferrandino (Lisle, Ill.). Ferrandino drove into the zone with the puck and passed through the slot to Singleton on the backdoor. Singleton one-timed it for his second of the night. This was Mayer's first point since being acquired by Central Illinois.
The Capitols got on the board at 2:28 in the third on the power play. Lucas Herrmann hammered the puck from the point with a one-timer and it slipped past Gibson five-hole.
Central Illinois restored their two-goal lead thanks to a goal from Chad Hillebrand (Skokie, Ill.) at 4:29 in the third. Madison attempted to break the puck out of their own zone, but Hillebrand caused a turnover with his backcheck. Jon Panisa (Irvine, Calif.) picked up the loose puck and passed to Lynden Breen (Grand Bay-Westfield, NB) in the slot. Breen's shot was blocked, but Hillebrand pushed the loose puck past the netminder.
Madison scored three goals in the last two minutes to come from behind and win thanks to a second goal from Herrmann and goals from Josh Boyer and Robert Blueger.
Next, the Flying Aces begin a stretch of six road games beginning with two games in Plymouth, Michigan next weekend as they take on the USNTDP. Central Illinois returns home on Friday, February 15th for Special Olympics Night and Saturday, February 16th for Hockey Fights Cancer Night.
