Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
The RoughRiders have reached the Clark Cup finals for the first time in team history by winning their first six playoff games. The Riders swept the Chicago Steel in the East Division finals after defeating the Indiana Ice in three straight in the division semi-finals.
Dating back to their final two regular season games- a pair of wins over the Green Bay Gamblers- the Riders have now won a season high eight straight games overall.
Prior to this season, the Riders had never won more than four games in a single post-season and had never put together more than two consecutive playoff wins.
The Riders outscored the Ice and Steel 26-13 over the first two rounds.
Matt Vokes (4-4-8) leads the Riders in playoff point scoring, just ahead of Ted Purcell (4-3-7). Purcell scored the game winning goals in games one and three of the division finals. Vokes scored in sudden death to give the Riders the win in game two against the Steel.
So far in the playoffs, the Riders have held the lead for 252:38 and have trailed for just 2:09. The Riders never trailed in the East Division finals.
Rookie goaltender Alex Stalock has been superb for the Riders in the post season. Stalock has gone 4-0 and leads the league with a microscopic 1.39 playoff goals against average and an equally superb .963 save percentage. Stalock was in net for all three games against Chicago, turning in a 1.21 goals against average and a .967 save percentage to stymie the Steel.
The Musketeers reached the finals by defeating the Tri-City Storm three games to one in the West Division finals. The Musketeers finished off the Storm with a 3-2 win last night in Kearney, Nebraska.
The Musketeers won each of their first two series in four games. Sioux City eliminated Lincoln in the opening round.
This is the Musketeers' second trip to the finals in four years. The Muskies won the Clark Cup in 2002.
Sioux City has generated plenty of playoff offense. The Musketeers have averaged 4.5 goals per post season game and have scored four or more goals in six of their first eight playoff contests.
Sioux City's Brian Bales (7-7-14) and Tim Kennedy (3-8-11) are the USHL's top two post season point scorers by a comfortable margin. Bales tops the league in playoff goals, while Kennedy leads the way in assists.

COACHES
Cedar Rapids
Mark Carlson, 6th year (185-138-32)
Mark Carlson has been the RoughRiders' coach since the team arrived in Cedar Rapids in 1999-2000. This season he has led the RoughRiders to a share of the Anderson Cup regular season title, the East Division title and a berth in the Clark Cup finals, all firsts in club history.
He has also piloted the Riders to five straight winning seasons, five straight Clark Cup playoff berths and three trips to the Clark Cup semi-finals in the last four years. The Riders are one of just three USHL teams to have reached the post season each of the last five years.
Carlson reached the 150 victory plateau October 30 as the RoughRiders defeated the Indiana Ice 4-3. He earned his one hundredth coaching win on January 11, 2003 when the RoughRiders defeated the Sioux City Musketeers 3-1 in Sioux City.
He was behind the bench for his three hundredth game as RoughRiders coach as the Riders defeated Indiana 6-5 in a shootout in Indianapolis on October 17.
Prior to taking over the RoughRiders in 1999, Carlson spent four seasons as a collegiate assistant coach at Northeastern and Massachusetts-Lowell. In his playing days, Carlson was a forward at Lowell and was a 1987 draft pick of the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins.
Sioux City
Dave Siciliano 12th year (428-165-40); 5th year Sioux City (179-88-30)
Siciliano is the second winningest coach in USHL history. The Musketeers have finished with a winning record in each of his five seasonns with the club. This is the second time Siciliano has piloted the Muskies to the Clark Cup finals. Sioux City won the cup under his direction in 2002.
Siciliano spent seven highly successful years behind the bench of the now-defunct Thunder Bay Flyers from 1986 through 1993. He led the Flyers to both the Clark Cup and Anderson Cup (regular season title) in 1988 and again in 1989 and to another pair of Anderson Cups in 1991 and 1992. The Thunder Bay native was named USHL Coach of the Year in 1987, 1989 and 1991.
Prior to returning to the USHL with Musketeers in 2000, Siciliano spent two years behind the bench of the Ontario Hockey League's Owen Sound Platers.
HISTORY
The Riders swept their first two series, whitewashing first the Indiana Ice and then the Chicago Steel, after never sweeping a playoff series before this year.
While this marks the first time the Riders have reached the Clark Cup finals, this is the third time in the last four years the Riders have advanced to the East Division finals/Clark Cup semi-finals. The Riders first made it to the USHL's final four in 2002 when they defeated the Lincoln Stars in four games in the opening round before falling to the Omaha Lancers in four in round two. The following spring the Riders knocked off the Topeka ScareCrows in four games in the opening round to advance to the semi-finals, where they fell in three straight to Lincoln.
The Riders have already won six playoff games this year after never before picking up more than four wins in a single post season.
The Riders have won their first first six playoff games this year after never before winning more than two consecutive post season games.
The Riders scored five or more goals in each of their three opening round games after only once before in team history scoring five goals in a single playoff game (a 5-1 win over Sioux Falls on March 31, 2001).
After winning in overtime in game two of the East Division finals and game three of the division semi-finals, The Riders are now 5-1 all-time in playoff overtime.
Brandon Svendsen recorded the first hat trick in Rider playoff history when he scored three times in the Riders' playoff-opening 7-3 win over the Ice on Friday, April 8.
The Riders wrapped up a share of the USHL's Anderson Cup regular season title- the club's first- with a 4-2 win over the Green Bay Gamblers on April 2.
The RoughRiders clinched the first East Division title in club history on February 26 after finishing second in the division each of the last four years.
The Riders had twice in the prior three years narrowly missed out on first place. The Riders finished one point behind the division champion Chicago Steel last season. In 2001-02, the Riders could have claimed the eastern title with a win over the Green Bay Gamblers on the final night of the regular season, but lost that game 1-0 and finished three points behind Green Bay.
The RoughRiders this season set new team records for wins (42), points (89), road wins (24), goals scored (229), power play goals scored (64) and fewest goals against (157).
The Riders also set new United States Hockey League records for most road wins and longest road winning streak (13 straight from November 9 through February 11).
This is the Riders' fourth 30-victory season in the team's six-year Cedar Rapids history. This season marks the first time the Riders have won 40 or more games.
Ted Purcell (20-47-67) set new team single season records for assists and points. Purcell snapped the old assist record set by Micah Wouters, who collected 41 assists in 1999-2000. Purcell topped the old points record of 57 set last year by Jon Grabarek.
Matt Vokes (27-25-52) and Justin Abdelkader (27-25-52) tied the record for goals in one season. Vokes and Abdelkader equaled a record first set by Nate Meyers, who had 27 goals in 2001-02.
Riders captain Rob Ricci recorded points in the Riders' final fifteen regular season games, breaking the team record for longest point-scoring streak. Ricci's run was also the longest point-scoring streak in the USHL this season. Ricci scored eleven goals and totaled 22 points during that run. Ricci broke a record set by Jon Grabarek, who had points in ten consecutive games from October 24 through November 21 of last season.
Ray Eichenlaub set a new team record for most goals by a defenseman with 12. Eichenlaub broke the old record of 11 goals set last season by Shane Lovdahl.
Lovdahl (7-30-37) set team single season records for most assists and points by a defenseman. Lovdahl snapped records set by Derek Peltier, who had 26 assists and 33 points last season.
Four Riders- Abdelkader (27), Vokes (27), Ricci (26) and Purcell (20)- scored at least 20 goals this year, breaking the team record for most 20-goal scorers in one season. Nate Meyers (27), Kevin Brooks (21) and Ted O'Leary (20) reached the 20-goal plateau for the Riders in 2001-02.
Grabarek finished his third and final regular season with the RoughRiders as the team's all-time career leader in goals (54), assists (75) and points (129).
Zach Miskovic finished his final regular season with the Riders having not missed a single game in his three years with the team. In addition to holding the club record for consecutive games played (180), Miskovic also ranks second in club history in total games (consecutive or otherwise). Chris Snavely is the club record holder. Snavely played 212 regular season games in four years with the Riders.
Miskovic's streak of 194 straight regular season and playoff games played ended after a concussion sidelined him for the East Division finals.
The Riders have not missed the playoffs since 1999-2000, their first season in Cedar Rapids. The Riders were eliminated by the Danville Wings in the first round of last year's playoffs after reaching the semi-finals each of the prior two years.
In 2002, the Riders defeated the Lincoln Stars three games to one in the opening round after finishing 16 points behind the Stars during the regular season. The Riders went on to fall to Omaha 3-1 in the semi-finals that spring.
In 2003, the Riders defeated the Topeka ScareCrows in four games in the first round after finishing the regular season 18 points behind the ScareCrows. The Riders fell to Lincoln in three straight in the semi-finals.
The Riders first qualified for the post season in 2000-01. The Riders lost their first ever playoff series to the Sioux Falls Stampede three games to one.
Sioux City's 2002 Clark Cup title was the third in club history. The Musketeers won the Anderson and Clark Cups in both 1982 and 1986.
