Winston-Salem, NC â Following a two-hour delay due to bus problems, the Knoxville Ice Bears defeated the Winston-Salem Polar Twins 5-4 Friday night at LJVM Annex.
The Polar Twins got on the board early when the Ice Bears knocked the puck in their own goal at 2:01 of the first period. Trevor Karasiewicz was credited with the tally. The initial shot was blocked by goaltender James Ronayne but the puck was knocked into the net by a Knoxville defender. Joe Pace and Troy Ilijow were credited with assists on the play.
Knoxville came back at the 5:50 mark of the first on K.J. Voorhees' first goal of the season. K.C. Caudill pulled the Ice Bears ahead just 38 seconds later, capitalizing on a defensive mistake by Winston-Salem, making it 2-1.
The Polar Twins answered with two power play tallies in the second period. Brett Cross scored his first of the season, faking out Ronayne and netting the backhander, to tie the game 2-2. Marcus Willy put the Polar Twins ahead at 3-2 with a slapper from just inside the blue line. Shaun Aebig and Chad Brandimore received assists on the play, giving Brandimore a point in his third consecutive game. Brandimore added a goal of his own in the third period for his eighth point of the season, tying him with Jacksonville's Brad Federenko for league lead in scoring and giving the Polar Twins a 4-2 advantage.
Caudill added his second goal of the game for Knoxville, putting home a rebound to make it 4-3 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third period. Todd Paul tied the game 4-4 with a power play tally at 16:59 of the third. Caudill then completed the hat trick at 18:22, netting the go-ahead goal for a 5-4 Knoxville win.
