The Fort Worth Cats of the Independent American Association have signed right-handed pitchers Max Scherzer and Chadd Blasko.

Scherzer, the 11th overall pick in the June 2006 Major League draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, was 7-3 with a 2.25 ERA during the 2006 season for the University of Missouri. He received All Big 12 Honorable Mention honors that year.

In 2005, Scherzer was the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year after leading the conference with a 1.86 ERA and 131 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings of work. His 131 strikeouts were a new school record. He posted a 9-4 record that season for the Tigers in 14 games. In addition to Big 12 honors, Scherzer in 2005 was selected as a Collegiate Baseball All-American and was named to Baseball America's All-American Second Team.

Originally from St. Louis, Scherzer, 22, was originally drafted by the Cardinals in 2003, but opted to go Missouri instead.

Blasko, 26, spent two seasons in the Chicago Cubs organization after he was chosen 36th overall in the 2002 draft.

In 2003, he was 10-5 with a 1.98 ERA in 24 starts with Daytona in the Gulf Coast League. The next year, he posted a 5-4 record with a 5.64 ERA in 13 games for Double-A West Tennessee.

Blasko has missed the last two seasons due to injury. He is originally from South Bend, Ind. and played college baseball at Purdue.
