Cats re-sign Kip Harkrider

The Cats have signed second baseman Kip Harkrider to a contract for the 2007 season, it was announced today. It will be his second year in Fort Worth.

Last season, Harkrider batted .317 with a homer and 31 runs batted in. He played 82 games for the Cats, 74 of those at second base. He stood out during the playoffs, posting a .435 batting average (20 hits in 46 at bats) with five RBIs in 10 games, helping the Cats to their 2006 American Association title.

Harkrider played in 54 games for Edinburg in 2005, batting .347 with three homers and 29 runs batted in. He was named the Central League's Player of the Month in July after posting a .402 average with 15 RBI. In 2003, Harkrider hit .316 in 37 games with Alexandria in the Central League before his season was cut short due to injury.

He was a fifth-round selection of the Dodgers in the 1997 draft. He split time in '97 between Savannah in the South Atlantic League and Vero Beach of the Florida State League. The next season, he was at Double-A San Antonio where he played the 1998 and 2000 seasons with the Missions.

In 1996, Harkrider was a member of the Bronze-medal winning U.S. Olympic Baseball team in Atlanta and had two hits in eight at bats during the tournament.

Harkrider,31, played college baseball at the University of Texas. He was a three-time All-Conference shortstop for the Longhorns. He was named MVP of the Southwest Conference in 1996 after batting .381in 62 games. and was also selected as a second-team All-American that year. In '96 the American Baseball Coach's Association also honored him as an All-Region selection.
