Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Winnipeg- The Gary South Shore RailCats continued a strong road trip on Friday, defeating the Winnipeg Goldeyes 3-2.
The Goldeyes struck in the first with a long ball from lead-off man Tyler Kuhn off Cats' starter Stephen Hiscock. The Cats wasted no time coming back, as Craig Maddox launched a home run of his own in the top of the second. The Cats did not stop there as Josh Romanski singled and Ryan Brockett followed with a double. Drew Muren hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Romanski and putting the Cats up 2-1.
The Cats were able to add on in the fourth as Romanski led off with a walk. He advanced to second as Brockett grounded out and scored on a two-out single by Drew Muren, giving the Cats a 3-1 advantage.
Winnipeg threatened in the fifth inning with the heart of their order. Brock Bond singled to lead off the frame and after Casey Haerther popped out, Reggie Abercrombie drew a walk which put runners at first and second with one out. Hiscock would respond by getting Josh Mazzola to fly out to Romanski in left and striking out Donnie Webb to end the inning.
After getting six innings from Hiscock, the Cats called on their bullpen which has been dependable as of late. Kagen Hopkins worked a scoreless seventh inning for the Cats and Ian Kadish did the same in the eighth. The Goldeyes did not go quietly in their last at bat as Tyler Kuhn hit his second home run of the game, this time off Barry Fowler to cut the Cats' lead to 3-2. However, Folwer recovered and got Bond to line out and finished the game by inducing a ground out from Hearther, giving the Cats a 3-2 victory. Hiscock earned his sixth victory of the season and the save for Fowler was his first in a Cats uniform.
The RailCats will play game two of the three game set tomorrow night at 6:00. Dan Vaughan will have the call on WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
