Fort Worth Cats News Release

The Fort Worth Cats defeated the San Angelo Colts 6-3 on Saturday night at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, TX. The Cats created some late-inning drama once again that vaulted them over San Angelo to earn the first place spot in the South Division of the North American League. A four run eighth inning for Fort Worth turned a 3-2 deficit into the eventual final score of 6-3.

The scoring started with a groundout from first baseman Jose Ruiz that scored center fielder Randall Thorpe to tie the game 3-3. Ruiz hit a solo homerun earlier in the fourth inning to also tie the game at 2-2.

The rally continued with a line drive from left fielder Chad Gabriel that San Angelo shortstop Landon Camp could not hold on to that scored opposing shortstop Shelby Ford to give the Cats their first lead of the game.

Fort Worth would add on two more insurance runs off a double from designated hitter Chuck Caufield to score Gabriel and then a single from third baseman Brandon Jones to score Caufield.

The Cats' pitching was once again on spot tonight starting with seven innings of work from starter Blake Nation. Nation gave up all three of San Angelo's runs and all nine of their hits. Nation struck out four and walked two.

Mace Thurman made his sixth appearance on the year and earned his first win. Thurman threw a 1-2-3 eighth inning and picked up his 11th strikeout. T.J. Bozeman would come in for the save and pitched a 1-2-3 inning as well to seal the Cats' fourth consecutive victory.

San Angelo starter Brian Henschel (1-1) pitched an eight-inning complete game and had only given up two runs on seven hits before Fort Worth came back in the eighth inning. The Cats picked up four runs on two hits and an error in that crucial eighth inning.

With the win, the Cats record improves to 8-3 and they now lead the Colts in the standings by one game. Fort Worth will attempt to retain their first place spot tomorrow against San Angelo.

The Cats and Colts will play the fourth and fifth games of a five game home-and-home series in a doubleheader at LaGrave Field tomorrow afternoon starting at 2:35 p.m. The two squads will play two seven inning games with the second starting half an hour after the first ends.
