San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, TX - On a night when the San Angelo Colts celebrated their one millionth fan and their new scoreboard, it was Trey Carter who stole the show. The Colts catcher hit a two-run homerun (3) to give San Angelo a 15-10 comeback win over the Amarillo Dillas and snap their five-game losing streak.
The Colts jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first against Amarillo stater Ralph Roberts. Centerfielder Ronnie Gaines led off the frame with a solo homerun (2), which was followed by a solo shot from designated hitter Jason Landreth (3) two batters later. Carter drove in a run with a groundout, and after one inning the Colts led 3-0.
Amarillo would battle back however. Down 4-1 in the third, the Dillas would score eight runs over the next two frames to take control of the game. Leftfielder TJ Warren doubled in a run and third baseman Carlos Figueroa singled in another in the second. The Dillas plated five more runs in the fourth with second baseman Jermel Lomack providing the big blow with a two-run homer (1) giving Amarillo a 9-5 lead after three-and-a-half innings.
After trading runs the Colts found themselves down 10-6 entering the bottom of the eighth. San Angelo would then explode for nine runs while sending 13 men to the plate. They had already scored three runs in the inning thanks to a sac fly and two wild pitches, before setting the stage for Carter's heroics. Later in the inning, Gaines went deep again on a two-run blast (4) as the Colts added four more runs in the inning after Carter's go-ahead homer.
For the game, Carter went 2-5 with a homerun, double, two runs scored and three RBI. Gaines had a big night going 3-5 with two homeruns, a double and four runs scored along with three RBI. The Colts pounded out 20 hits for the game as leftfielder John Wagle chipped in going 3-5 with two triples, two runs and an RBI.
Matt Chutchain (2-0) got the win in relief going three innings and allowing an unearned run on four hits. Reliever Chris Ingoglia (2-0) took the loss after allowing six earned runs in 2.1 innings of work.
In other news, the Colts have added right-handed pitchers Chandler Barnard and Alexis Morales to their roster. Barnard, who was traded to Shreveport-Bossier of the American Association in the off-season, went 9-5 for San Angelo last year with a 3.07 ERA. He is a Lubbock, TX native who played collegiately for Trinity (CT) College, where he won a Division III National Championship.
Morales, an eight-year veteran, pitched for Grand Prairie and Fort Worth of the American Association last season where he went 3-5 in 29 appearances with two saves. A former member of the Expos/Nationals organization, Morales has an 18-22 career record with a 4.29 ERA and 20 saves. Morales, a Chicago native, pitched for Oakton Community College in Illinois before being selected by the Expos in the 46th round of the 2003 MLB draft.
To make room, the Colts have placed right-handed pitched Scott Crook and leftfielder Jason Crosland on the inactive list. Crook is 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA in four appearances while Crosland, who had been hampered with a sore wrist over the last week, was hitting .343 with three homers and 12 RBI in eight games this season with San Angelo.
The Colts take on the Dillas in game two of their four-game series tomorrow at 7:05. Ezekiel Astacio (1-2, 5.21 ERA) will go for the Colts against Richard Jessup (0-1, 14.40 ERA). The game can be heard on 1260 KKSA with the pregame show getting things underway at 6:50.
