Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

All week long the Corpus Christi Rayz had been catching up to the Youngstown Steelhounds. On Saturday night, at the Chevrolet Centre, the Rayz leapt in front of them. Ryan Carter capped off a four-point night and three-goal comeback with a power play goal 32 seconds into overtime to give Corpus Christi a 5-4 win. The Rayz ended their three-game set with the Hounds with four points in three games and extended their unbeaten streak to six games. The win was the latest of dramatic comebacks against the Hounds. The Rayz now have 18 points on the year in 16 games and moved one point behind the idle Laredo Bucks.

The Hounds jumped onto the scoreboard with an early power play goal 1:50 into the hockey game. Jeff Alcombrack took a shot from the right point that was redirected by Chris Richards for the first goal of the game. Richards scored his tenth goal of the season and CHL-leading 29th point. The Hounds then upped their lead to 2-0 when Doug Orr snapped a shot from the right circle into the top right corner of the net at 6:51. The Hound then made the score 3-0 when John Neal converted a two on one feed from Brian Teixeira at 13:35. Corpus Christi got onto the scoreboard with a late first period goal when Jason Baird scored his fourth of the year from the bottom of the slot with 34 seconds left in the period. The Rayz outshot the Hounds 11-7.

The Rayz followed the late goal with an early second period tally to cut the deficit to one. Derrick McIver scored his seventh goal of the year 38 seconds into the frame to make the score 3-2 Hounds. Youngstown increased the lead back to two when Chris Shaffer one-timed a faceoff win from the top of the right circle past Vogel at 13:47. The Hounds outshot the Rayz 13-10 in the second period.

The Rayz closed the gap in the third period. At 3:25, Baird notched his second goal of the night on a power play after his shot was kicked in by Youngstown's Alcombrack. Corpus Christi tied it for the first time since early in the first when Connor Hughes scored his first professional goal from the right circle at 16:58. Baird drew an interference penalty with 1:11 remaining in regulation, which set the stage for Carter's heroics.

On the power play, 32 seconds into overtime, Carter slammed home a rebound after McIver hit the post a second earlier. Carter became the third Rayz player to score an overtime goal this season and gave the Rayz their first win of the season series against Youngstown.

The Rayz earned their fourth win in the last six games and jumped to 8-6-2. The Steelhounds moved their record to 8-3-4 and have points in six of seven. Vogel earned the win improving his record to 6-4-1, while Currie suffered the overtime loss, watching his record move to 3-3-3. The Rayz outshot the Hounds 35-24. Corpus Christi went 2-7 on the man advantage. Youngstown went 1-6.
