Hounds Drop Heartbreaker in Last Home Game

November 25, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

The Youngstown SteelHounds looked to finish their six-game home stand on a high note against the Corpus Christi Rayz but drop a close one 5-4 in overtime despite leading the first period by a score of 3-0 and at the end of two period by a 4-2 count. Ryan Carter was the hero of the night with four points including the game winning goal in overtime. The game marked the third straight contest this week that went to an extra session between the Hounds and the Rayz with Youngstown winning twice previously in shootouts.

The Hounds pounced on the visitors early and often as Chris Richards scored his 10th goal of the season (league leading 29th point) on the power play to put Y-Town up 1-0 in the first period. The Hounds made it 2-0 thanks to Doug Orr's second goal of the season at 6:51 from Stephen Margeson and Jeff Wheaton. The scoring in the opening frame would not be over though as six minutes later John Neal would knock in a pretty one-timer from Brian Teixeira to make it 3-0 for the Hounds, but momentum turned some with just 34 seconds left in the first when Jason Baird scored his first of two goals to make it 3-1 after one period.

The second period started faster then the first as the Rayz made it 3-2 on a Derrick McIver goal at 38 seconds of the second period. Youngstown would answer back as Chris Schaffer sent a slap shot off a face off to make it 4-2 after two periods seeming to the Hounds in command.

However, in the third period the Rayz would come storming back with Jason Baird getting his second tally of the night followed by a Jason Lapine goal with three minutes left to send the game to overtime. A questionable call with just over a minute remaining in regulation would give the Rayz a power play that would carry over into overtime.

In a game that saw a fight between Josh Reed and Corpus's Adam Powell, 13 combined power plays and the Hounds getting out shot for only the third time this season (35-24), it would only take Ryan Carter 32 seconds of overtime to slam one past David Currie and give the visitors a 5-4 victory. The power play goal would finish the night at 1 for 7 on the man advantage for Corpus Christi and the Hounds would finish 1 for 6 marking the eighth straight game that Youngstown scored on the power play.

The Hounds finish the home stand at 3-1-2 picking up eight points and keeping them in first place in the Northeast division. Youngstown will be on the road for eight straight starting Tuesday night when they take on the Tulsa Oilers at 8:05pm. All games are available on ESPN 1240-The Fan and steelhounds.com.
