Carreras becomes NWL first seven-game winner

August 9, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears shut out the Eugene Emeralds 2-0 Wednesday night at Yakima County Stadium to snap a four-game losing streak. The Bears now trail in the five-game series against the Emeralds 2-1.

Bears starter Alex Carreras danced with danger for five shutout innings, leaving nine runners on base. Carreras gave up four hits and walked six batters, but did not allow a run on the way to becoming the Northwest League's first seven-game winner in 2012. Behind Carreras, the bullpen did not allow a single batter to reach in four innings of work. RJ Hively tossed two scoreless innings and Will Locante and Enrique Burgos each had one shutout inning, with Burgos earning his third save. The shutout is the sixth of the season for the Bears staff, which once again has the lowest team ERA in the league at 3.08.

The only runs on the night came in the fourth when Joe Loftus was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Shaun Cooper hit a home run over the left field wall. It was the fifth home run of the season for Cooper, who finished the day 3-for-4.

The Bears and Emeralds meet in game four of the series Thursday night at Yakima County Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 7:05. Left-handed pitcher Daniel Watts of the Bears and right-handed pitcher Chris Wilkes of the Emeralds are the probable pitchers.
