Carolina Speed News Release

Buoyed by another strong defensive effort, the Carolina Speed outscored Baltimore 24-6 in the second half en route to a convincing 48-25 victory, the club's fourth straight win Saturday night at the 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore. The Speed improve to 5-2 at the midway point of the AIFA season and face a pivotal stretch, beginning Saturday night with a South division showdown with the unbeaten (7-0) Mississippi Mudcats at the Cabarrus Arena.

Playing in front of a "flock" estimated at 4,500 enthusiastic fans in their franchise home debut, the Blackbirds (0-4) took brief leads of 13-10 and 19-18 in the first half before Carolina's offense went to work. Former UNC/Troy quarterback Aaron Leak's two yard scamper right before the half gave the Speed a lead they would never relinquish. Leak, the former Prep All-American at Riverside High School in Durham, enjoyed another strong outing, throwing for five touchdowns and hooking up for three scores with former ECU star DeMarcus Fox (48 yds., 31 yds., and 25 yds.). Bruce Rienecker added field goals of 42 and 37 yards, along with a pair of rouges' to complete the Carolina scoring.

Meanwhile, the vaunted "Carolina Crush" defense continued their string of impressive performances, limiting their fourth consecutive opponent to under 35 points. The Speed attack unit continually harassed rookie Baltimore quarterback Joe Urso, forcing several poor throws and stifling any comeback hopes.

Toe-to-leather time for Saturday's battle with Mississippi is 7:05pm. Tickets are available by contacting the Speed office at (704) 920-3976. For further information, check the team's website at www.carolinaspeedprofootball.com.
