
Week Nine AIFA game review

As the 2007 AIFA regular-season reaches its midway point, week nine got off to a exciting start last Thursday night in Danville (IL) when the Demolition notched their first win of the year, "chilling" the Erie Freeze 48-45. Danville stands at 1-4 on the season, while Erie drops to 1-6 and last place in the AIFA's North division.
In other action, the Reading Express continued their ride atop the North division standings, crushing Huntington (WV) 48-18. Reading quarterback Tom Stetzer continued his strong play, throwing for five touchdown passes and 190 yards. Star Express receiver Carmello Ocasio returned to action after being out of the lineup due to injury, and made his presence felt, hauling in three touchdown catches. Reading improved to 6-1, the Heroes fall to 3-4.
Another team making noise is the surging Carolina Speed. With their vaunted "Carolina Crush" defense running over opponents, the Speed won their fourth straight, earning a 48-25 road victory over the Baltimore Blackbirds. Aaron Leak threw for five touchdowns, three to receiver DeMarcus Fox, and ran for another, while kicker Bruce Rienecker booted two field goals and a pair of rouges' for the Speed. Carolina, now 5-2, held its fourth straight opponent under 35 points and gears up for a South division showdown this Saturday evening with unbeaten division rival Mississippi. Baltimore remains winless at 0-4.
In a battle of Pennsylvania clubs and North division rivals, Pittsburgh quarterback David Dinkins' 40 yard scamper down the sideline with less than three minutes remaining gave the RiverRats a thrilling 47-42 win over Johnstown. Pittsburgh's defense picked off Riverhawks' quarterbacks five times to secure the victory. Both clubs are 3-4.
Elsewhere, the Tallahassee Titans continued their chase for the South division lead, clipping the Florence (SC) Phantoms 41-36. The Titans, 6-1, got another big performance by quarterback Ben Dougherty, who threw for five touchdowns and 209 yards. Rod Miller was on the receiving end for Tallahassee, gathering in 161 yards in receptions. Florence dips to 1-5.
Week nine concluded with a Monday night matchup between undefeated (7-0) Mississippi and winless (0-4) Montgomery (AL). Mississippi Remained unbeaten with a 60-39 victory over the Bears Lakeland, Canton, and Gulf Coast each had byes and were idle.
