Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (13-9) struggled to get the bats going on Thursday night against the Carolina Mudcats (13-9) as the Milwaukee Brewers' affiliate took game three of the series 6-2.
It didn't take long for the Shorebirds to get on the board as Carter Young led off the night with a home run for Delmarva, his first long ball of the season made it 1-0 after an inning of play.
In the second, the Mudcats quickly snatched the lead away as an RBI single by Daniel Guilarte tied the game, followed by a three-run homer by Matt Wood put the Shorebirds in a 4-1 hole.
The pitchers for both teams would take over from there on out as the score remained 4-1 all the way into the seventh inning.
Delmarva would look to ignite a late comeback as Adam Crampton pushed a one-out, double down the third base line to score Elio Prado from second. His third hit and second double of the game trimmed the deficit to 4-2. Crampton would make it to third base but would be left stranded there when the inning ended.
Relievers Hugo Beltran and Jared Beck helped keep Delmarva in the game as Beltran entered in the top of the second and would proceed to cover 2.1 innings, retiring all seven men he faced. Beck took over for him in the fifth and was lights out as he dealt 4.2 innings with 9 strikeouts, both career-highs. The Mudcats, however, with two outs in the ninth and two in scoring position got a base hit from Daniel Guilarte that brought home both runners to spoil a near-perfect ending to Beck's night, extending the Carolina lead to 6-2.
The Shorebirds went down in order in the bottom of the ninth as the Mudcats held on for a 6-2 win in game three.
Patricio Aquino (1-1) earned the win for Carolina with Wyatt Cheney (1-2) taking the loss as the starter for Delmarva. Tyler Wehrle (1) earned the save by recording the final 12 outs.
In what was a quiet night from the offense, the Shorebirds did get notable performances from Adam Crampton who picked up his second three-hit game of the year as doubled twice and drove in a run for the second consecutive game. Carter Young also picked up a multi-hit performance, including his first home run of the season to lead off the game.
Deivy Cruz gets the ball on Friday night as Delmarva looks to even up the series again with Carolina with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
