Carolina Courage News Release
Chapel Hill, NC (April 2, 2002) - The Carolina Courage defeated the UNC Tar Heels, 2-0, in a preseason scrimmage on Tuesday evening at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Hege Riise and Danielle Fotopoulos recorded goals for the WUSA club. The last time Danielle Slaton took the field against the North Carolina Tar Heels, there was much more at stake. The co-captain of the 2001 NCAA Champion Santa Clara Broncos, who earned Defensive MVP honors at the College Cup in Dallas in December, played a familiar opponent with brand new teammates on Tuesday night at Fetzer Field. One of her new teammates, Hege Riise opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Riise, who will take over captain duties for Carla Overbeck to begin the season, just arrived from Norway in great form. After 22 minutes, the Courage scored again. Danielle Fotopoulos received a nice pass from newcomer Meghan Anderson and rifled the ball past the UNC goalkeeper. The Tar Heels were playing without returning stars Leslie Gaston, Annie Morrell and Jen Branam, who were all recovering from injuries. The Heels were also without seniors Jena Kluegel and Danielle Borgmann, who are playing with the WUSA's Boston Breakers and San Jose CyberRays, respectively. The Courage will play its final preseason exhibition against the Atlanta Beat on Saturday, April 6 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Carolina Courage will open the regular season on April 13 on the road against the San Diego Spirit. The Courage will play its home matches at the brand new State Capital Soccer Park in Cary.
