COBRAS LAST WEEK: Rob Bironas connected on a 26-yard field goal with just two seconds remaining in the contest to give the Carolina Cobras a thrilling 46-43 victory over the Soul Saturday night at the Wachovia Spectrum. Bironas' kick completed a string of 15 consecutive points for Carolina, who trailed 43-31 with just over six minutes remaining in the contest. Carolina's furious comeback began with a 3-yard touchdown catch by WR/DB Lenzie Jackson to cut the Philadelphia lead to 43-37. The Cobras then forced Soul K Ken Hinsley into an errant 44-yard field goal attempt and two plays later, QB Rickey Foggie found WR/LB Todd Doxzon for a 19-yard touchdown reception to tie the game at 43-all. However, Bironas missed his second PAT attempt of the night and the contest remained deadlocked. On the Soul's ensuing drive, QB Todd Hammel was intercepted by WR/LB D.J. Humphries to set the stage for the winning kick.
RAMPAGE LAST WEEK: Two Columbus onside kicks and the ensuing scores resulted in a 20-0 Destroyers advantage before the Rampage took their first snap. The twenty-point deficit was too much to overcome as Grand Rapids lost 59-28 Friday night. After scoring first on a lobbed two-yard touchdown from Offensive Player of the Game Ryan Vena to Gunnard Twyner, the Destroyers caught the Rampage off guard with an onside kick. Game Ironman Cornelius White scooped up the kick and five plays later he finished the drive with a 17-yard scoring strike from Vena. Destroyer kicker Steve Videtich squibbed the ball a second time with Titcus Pettigrew recovering it. Pettigrew ended the drive two plays later when he weaved through the Rampage defense, dodging would-be tacklers for a 37-yard touchdown.

COBRAS NEXT WEEK: Carolina winds up the 2004 campaign on the road against the Georgia Force on Saturday, May 29 at 7:00 p.m. at The Arena at Gwinnett Center. The former Southern Division foes have squared off four times over the past two seasons with the Force holding a 3-1 advantage.
HEAD COACHES: Ron Selesky (7-13) makes his return to the Cobras sidelines this season after spending the 2004 season as head coach and director of football operations for the Buffalo Destroyers. He previously was a member of Carolina's original coaching staff in 2000 as an assistant coach and director of player personnel. Prior to joining the Destroyers, Selesky earned af2 Coach of the Year honors in 2002, guiding the Albany Conquest to a regular season mark of 13-3 and a Northeast Division title. Selesky also spent the 2001 season on the sidelines for the af2 Louisville Fire, leading the team to a 6-10 mark. He also serves as the director of player personnel and assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Storm from 1997 to 1999. With the Storm, his teams compiled a 31-11 regular season record and earned a berth in the 1998 ArenaBowl.
Former Milwaukee Mustangs Head Coach Rick Frazier (24-35) took the reigns as interim head coach following the departure of Bob Cortese, who began the season as the club's head coach. He brings more than a quarter century worth of football coaching experience to the Grand Rapids, including nearly a decade of Arena experience. Frazier spent seven seasons with the Milwaukee Mustangs (1995-2001) and from 1998-2001 was the team's head coach. Following the Mustangs being contracted before the 2002 season, he served as the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the Toronto Phantoms, then was the head coach of the af2's Norfolk Nighthawks in 2003. In 1996, Frazier's Mustang defense was the top-ranked unit in Arena Football leading the league in total defense, pass defense and sacks. In 1997 and 1998, they finished fifth in total defense.
FAMILIAR FACES: Rampage OL/DL Nate Bell spent four weeks on the Cobras roster earlier in 2004...Bell also appeared in a New York Dragons uniform from 2001 to 2003 with OS Todd Doxzon, WR/DB Damien Groce, QB Matt Nagy, OL/DL Sean Tremblay, OL/DL Cory Stone and OL/DL Robert Stewart...Grand Rapids OL/DL Hardy Mitchell was teammates of Carolina OL/DL Otis Moore and WR/LB Sir Mawn Wilson under Cobras interim head coach Ron Selesky in Buffalo in 2002...FB/LB Michael Blair was a member of the Carolina roster in 2003...Rampage OL/DL Paul LaQuerre spent the 2003 season alongside FB/LB Chris Pope with the Las Vegas Gladiators.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
QB Rickey Foggie: The seven-year AFL veteran has been quite impressive since taking over the starting job four weeks ago. Foggie has received Offensive Player of the Game honors on two occasions as he has passed for 1,154 yards and 19 touchdowns on 100-of-155 passing. In his first start of the season on April 17, he completed 22-of-31 passes for a season-high 338 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Philadelphia. Foggie currently ranks among the AFL's all-time leaders in all major passing categories.
OS Damien Groce: Groce has emerged as a dangerous weapon as a receiver, rusher and kick returner this season. In 13 games, he has 68 catches for 822 yards and a single-season record tying 19 touchdowns, including the game-winning score in the Cobras come-from-behind win at Columbus (2/13). Groce had a career performance in his first start at offensive specialist against Philadelphia, setting career highs with eight receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns. He currently ranks 9th in the AFL with 1,735 all-purpose yards and has set Carolina single-season records for touchdowns (21) and points scored (126)
WR/DB Jarrick Hillery: The fifth-year veteran is one of the most versatile two-way players in the AFL. He has made contributions on offense, defense and special teams in 2004, earning AFL Ironman of the Week honors following the Cobras victory over the Tampa Bay Storm (3/21). Thus far, he ranks among the team leaders with 30 receptions (4th), 324 receiving yards (4th), 19.2 kickoff return average (1st) and 31.5 tackles (1st).
WR/LB D.J. Humphries: The first-year player out of Presbyterian College has made an immediate impact after seeing his playing time increase over the last four weeks. Thus far, he has notched 28 catches for 267 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 11 tackles on defense. His lanky frame has proven to be an asset at receiver and âjack' linebacker.
RAMPAGE PLAYERS TO WATCH:
OS Steve Smith: The fourth-year veteran out of Utah State has developed into one of the most explosive kick returners in the entire AFL. This season, he has returned 64 kickoffs for a league-high 1,521 yards and five touchdowns (23.8 yards/return). Already in 2004, Smith has set team records in all major kickoff return categories. The 5-9 speedster also leads the Rampage with 59 receptions for 658 yards and 10 scores.
FB/LB Chris Avery: Entering his fourth season out of Kentucky State, Avery has capitalized on his first extended playing time of his career. Thus far, Avery has compiles 192 rushing yards on 42 attempts for a league-leading 4.6 yards/rush. The bruising FB/LB also has recorded 25.5 tackles and a team-high nine quarterback hurries on the defensive end.
DS Cecil Doggette: One of the most prolific defenders in AFL history continues to add to his list of accomplishments. This season, he leads the Rampage with 63.0 tackles and a league-high 24 passes defended. The 10-year veteran stands tied for first in league history with 133 career passes defended and ranks among the top 10 with 449.0 career tackles.

New Guys in Town: The matchup between Carolina and Grand Rapids will mark the only meeting between interim head coaches in the AFL this season. The Cobras' Ron Selesky has earned a 2-2 mark since taking over for John Gregory following week 10 of the season. Gregory had earlier replaced Eddie Khayat, who was dismissed after six weeks of play. For the Rampage, Rick Frazier is 0-3 after replacing Bob Cortese, who secured just one win in the team's first 11 games.
Familiar Faces: The Rampage's arrival rekindles memories of the Cobras only postseason victory in team history. Carolina completed the 2002 campaign 6-8 and earned the club a first round matchup with the third seeded Grand Rapids squad. Behind the play of QB John Fitzgerald (25-of-34, 278 yards, 8 TDs) and OS Aaron Bailey (10 receptions, 172 yards 6 TDs), the Cobras outscored the Rampage 72-64 in the July 28 meeting at the Van Andel Arena. Carolina went on to fall to Arizona Rattlers, 61-59, in the quarterfinals.
Back in the Spotlight: Veteran quarterback Rickey Foggie has made a successful return under center after missing the 2003 season and being relegated to back-up duties for the first 10 games of the 2004 campaign. In just four starts this season, Foggie has completed 100-of-155 passes for 1,154 yards and 19 touchdowns. In that time, he has garnered Offensive Player of the Game honors on two occasions. In his first start of the season, he led the Cobras to a victory over the Philadelphia Soul (4/17), completing 22-of-31 passes for a season-high 338 yards and five touchdowns.
Seventh Heaven: With the victory over Philadelphia, the Cobras opened up the realistic possibility of tying the franchise record for victories in a season. Carolina notched a 7-7 record in 2001, before falling in the first round of the AFL postseason. With wins over Grand Rapids (1-13) and Georgia (5-9) Carolina could match that mark.
Comeback Kids: For the second time this season, the Cobras were able to overcome fourth-quarter deficits to secure last-second victories. In the second game of the season, Carolina outscored the Destroyers 13-3in the final frame, including a touchdown reception by OS Damien Groce on the final play of the game, to earn a 54-53 win. This phenomenon is new to the Cobras, who entered the season with a 1-33 mark when trailing after three quarters of play. This season, Carolina is 2-7.
Early Bird Gets the Worm: Carolina was able to buck a frustrating trend in the win over Philadelphia, overcoming a 16-0 advantage to secure a late victory. Throughout the season, Carolina has struggled when their opponents are first on the scoreboard. This season, Carolina is 4-2 when they score the first points of the game, but just 1-7 when the opponents notch the first points. A similar trend can be found throughout team history â (12-17 when scoring first; 9-34 when opponent scores first).
In the Zone: The Cobras have been very efficient in the red-zone throughout the 2004 season, leading the league with a 90.3 percent conversion percentage. In 62 trips inside their opponents' 10-yard line, Carolina has scored 49 touchdowns and seven field goals. On the other hand, Grand Rapids has converted only 39-of-52 opportunities (75.0 percent).
Nifty Fifty: The first team to 50 points very well could be the victor in this weekend's matchup. Throughout their five-year history, the Cobras have had very little success when they are unable to post 50 points or more. At the same time, they have been most successful when holding opponents under the half-century mark.

Stepping Up: First-year WR/LB D.J. Humphries continues to thrive in his first extended playing time of the season. After spending the first 10 weeks of the season on the Cobras practice squad, Humphries has posted 28 catches for 267 yards and four touchdowns to go along with 11.0 tackles on defense. He was honored as the U.S. Army Ironman of the Game in the win over Philadelphia after catching a team-hgih 9 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown and added an interception which set the stage for the game-winning field goal attempt.
Defensive Makeover: Defensive specialists Henry Baker and Fred Vinson made successful debuts in the Cobras starting backfield in the team's win over Philadelphia. Baker recorded a team-high 5.0 tackles, despite being knocked out of the game early with a neck injury, while Vinson notched a pair of tackles and showed a knack for pass breakups. Following the release of DS Daryon Brutley and WR/DB Ernest Ross, the Cobras fielded an all-new defensive backfield for the second time this season. The tandem had previously replaced DS Glenn Davis, who was lost for the season with a shoulder injury suffered in loss to New York (4/4), and DS Damon Mason, who was waived earlier in the season.
Getting Things Rolling: Carolina racked up 24 rushing yards in the team's win over Philadelphia last week after posting just 8.0 yards per game over the past 12 contests. The Cobras posted a season-high 30 yards on seven carries (4.3 yds/carry) in the season opening victory over the Dallas Desperados. FB/LB Travis Reece currently leads the team with 38 rush attempts for 80 yards and seven touchdowns, however Carolina ranks last in the AFL with 10.8 yards per game.
On the Sidelines: Ron Selesky was promoted to the interim head coach position three weeks ago, becoming the sixth head coach in Carolina history. It marked the fourth mid-season coaching change in five seasons.

Queen-Sized Win: Carolina put an end to a grueling, AFL-record 16-game home losing streak on March 21 with a 54-43 victory over the defending ArenaBowl champions, the Tampa Bay Storm. The Cobras special teams accounted for three touchdowns, while the defense pressured the Storm throughout the game, posting two interceptions and nine passes defended.
Nothing But Iron-man: WR/DB Jarrick Hillery was recognized as the Army Ironman of the Week for his performance against Tampa Bay on Sunday, March 21. The four-year veteran recorded two kickoff returns for touchdowns, caught three passes for 39 yards and a score and added four solo tackles and an interception on defense.
Heading In the Right Direction: Regardless of the recent struggles, this year's Cobras have seen a vast improvement over last season's squad in a number of key areas.

Ewww...Groce: Cobras OS Damien Groce has emerged as a dangerous playmaker, proving to be a force on offense and special teams. En route to setting career highs for receptions (68), receiving yards (822), and receiving touchdowns (19), Groce has also set team records touchdowns (21) and points scored (126). He had a standout performance in his first start at OS in win over Philadelphia on April 17 (8 rec., 173 yards, 3 TDs). The former New York Dragon also leads the team with 47 KO returns and 861 KO return yards and ranks 9th in the AFL with 1,735 all-purpose yards.
He Roxz: OS Todd Doxzon has been the Cobras most consistent receiver throughout the 2004 campaign and is on pace to shatter many of the franchise's single-season receiving records. Thus far, he is ninth in the league with 879receptions to go along with 1021 yards. Currently, he is tied for the single-season franchise record for receptions. Following is how he would stack up with the top pass catchers in Carolina's five-year history if he continues on his current pace.

Of the 21 remaining players on the active roster, 20 were signed as free agents.
