DENVER - Mammoth transition player Nick Carlson was among those honored with a Humanitarian Award at the Denver Sports Fans Choice Awards, held Monday night at the Brown Palace Hotel.

Carlson joined honorees Dan Hinote of the Colorado Avalanche, Nene of the Denver Nuggets and Nat Borchers of the Colorado Rapids, as a Humanitarian Award was bestowed upon one player from each of Denver's professional sports teams.

Carlson, an integral member of the lacrosse and greater Denver community for the last three years, has dedicated much of his time to the area's children. He works with local schools teaching the sport of lacrosse and hosting assemblies that teach the history and fundamentals of lacrosse, as well as the differences between the indoor and outdoor game.

"Nick has been a great ambassador of the game ever since he arrived here in Colorado," Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. "His efforts have really helped to increase youth participation in lacrosse throughout the Denver area."

Carlson has volunteered much of his time to The Children's Hospital, where he has participated in reading events for patients and visited those who are too sick to leave their rooms. He also has delivered Mammoth toys and other gifts to patients.

Last summer, Carlson acted as a community ambassador for the Meals-On-Wheels program in conjunction with the Volunteers of America for "Smile" week, visiting with the elderly on door-to-door flower deliveries in the Curtis Park area. He also auctioned his time to various charities, including Volunteers of America and The Children's Hospital for one-on-one lacrosse instruction with winning bidders.
