Sting Sign Blasdell
December 6, 2005 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Arizona Sting News Release
GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Arizona Sting Head Coach and General Manager Bob Hamley announced Tuesday the signing of goaltender Rob Blasdell to a one-year contract pending league approval.
"We're very happy to have Rob on our roster for the upcoming season," said Hamley. "He adds a lot to our team in terms of veteran leadership and presence in the locker room. He and Mike Miron were the top two goalies on the Ontario Lacrosse Association this past summer, so with those two and Ken Montour, we've got three quality guys between the pipes. We're very deep at the goaltending position this season."
Last season, Blasdell played in 9 games for the San Jose Stealth, posting a record of 1-2 while registering a 13.37 G.A.A. and a 73.08 save %. In 92 career games, the 6'1", 205 lb. goalie has made 2,670 saves; he is currently ranked sixth in NLL history in that category. His career G.A.A. and save % are 12.29 and 75.30 respectively. Blasdell's best season came in 2002 when, as a member of the Albany Attack, he led the NLL in saves (644), save % (77.50), and wins (13) while finishing third in G.A.A. (12.01). The Orillia, Ontario native was named a First Team All-Star following the 2002 season and was named NLL Goalie of the Year on April 11, 2002.
The Sting acquired Blasdell's rights in a trade with Edmonton on July 13, 2005 that sent a first round pick in 2007 to the expansion Rush. Edmonton had taken Blasdell with the second overall selection at the 2005 Expansion Draft.
The Arizona Sting is a professional indoor lacrosse team playing in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). In only their second season in Arizona (after re-locating from Columbus, Ohio), the Sting finished the 2005 season with a 9-7 regular-season record prior to going on to win the West Division Championship before losing to the Toronto Rock in the Champion's Cup Final (NLL title game).
