Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - Another team with a "Hawks" nickname is in the cards for Adam Cardona; the Waterloo Black Hawks rookie defenseman announced his commitment to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks on Wednesday evening.
Cardona is the 19th active Waterloo player to name his future school and the second this week. On Tuesday, Connor Brown committed to Western Michigan University.
This is Cardona's first season at the junior level. He is eligible for the National Hockey League draft this summer and in January was ranked 171st among prospects skating in North America by NHL Central Scouting.
"Adam is a tremendous young athlete who has played extremely hard for us this season," said Black Hawks Head Coach Matt Smaby. "His effort and compete-level will be assets for him as he climbs higher in the sport."
Cardona has been out of the Black Hawks lineup since an upper body injury on February 5th. Up to that point, he had played in all 37 Waterloo games, recording three goals and three assists. By scoring in the first period during a 5-1 victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers on December 10th, his goal proved to be a game-winner. Cardona had also notched his very first USHL goal in a game against the Bucs on October 9th.
Although he has been sidelined for more than a month, the Beaconsfield, Quebec, native's +5 plus/minus differential remains tied for first on the team and stands alone as the best mark among Black Hawks defensemen.
Former Waterloo blue-liner Brehdan Engum is currently a sophomore for the River Hawks. He and the Lowell squad will begin play in the NCAA Tournament tomorrow night versus Denver.
