Cardinals Fall to Drillers 6-5

Springfield, MO - The Cardinals 9th inning rally fell one short as the Redbirds lost to Tulsa 6-5 on Wednesday night at ONEOK Field.

Springfield sent righty Richard Castillo coming off a strong outing five days ago against righty Dan Houston of the Drillers who had not won a game in over a month.

The Cardinals struck first on Wednesday night as they had runners at first and second with two out before Chris Swauger lined an RBI single to center field scoring Oscar Taveras to give Springfield a quick 1-0 lead.

Tulsa answered with a run of their own in the 1st as Nolan Arenado grounded to shortstop to score Corey Dickerson to tie the game.

In the 2nd, the Drillers added another run on an RBI single by Mike Mitchell and Ben Paulsen hit a solo homer in the 3rd to hold a 3-1 lead after three innings.

Tulsa scored in the 4th and 5th innings as well as Jimmy Cesario singled with two outs in the fourth and Kent Matthes homered for the second straight night in the 5th to put Tulsa in front 5-1.

Springfield's offense woke up in the 6th getting to within two runs of the Drillers thanks to a two-run homer by Adam Melker to make the score 5-3.

Richard Castillo was done after five innings allowing a season high five runs on 11 hits, a new high for hits allowed by a Springfield pitcher this season.

The Cardinals got one closer in the 7th as Kotlen Wong doubled to start the inning and scored on a one out RBI single from Jamie Romak to make it a 5-4 game.

Tulsa added a huge insurance run in the 8th against reliever Michael Blazek as Corey Dickerson hit a solo home run to right field to give the Drillers a 6-4 lead going into the 9th inning.

In the 9th, Kolten Wong singled with one out and scored on Oscar Taveras' two out RBI double to make it 6-5. After a passed ball moved Taveras to third, closer Josh Sullivan got Jamie Romak to strike out to end the game.

The Cardinals will conclude their four-game series against the Tulsa Drillers Thursday night at 7:05pm. Springfield will send Carlos Martinez to the mound against Tyler Chatwood.

Springfield will return home to Hammons Field Friday to begin a seven-game homestand starting with NW Arkansas.
