Cardinals Best Miracle, 8-2, in Series Opener

JUPITER, Fla. (May 1, 2014) - The Palm Beach Cardinals knocked off the Fort Myers Miracle, 8-2, at Roger Dean Stadium on Thursday evening after rain delayed the start time by 44 minutes.

In the bottom of the second inning, David Washington provided the first run of the game with a solo home run off Miracle starter Jose Berrios. On the first pitch, Washington deposited a high fly ball beyond the right field fence for a 1-0 Palm Beach lead.

The Cardinals tacked on a second run in the fourth. Breyvic Valera dropped a two-out single into center field, then took second on a passed ball. A Berrios (1-2) wild pitch sparked a Valera attempt to move up to third. Jairo Rodriguez's throw sailed into left field and Valera scored, 2-0.

In the fifth, Palm Beach strung together four consecutive hits off Berrios to bring in a pair of runs. Charlie Tilson and Nick Martini each tallied RBI singles.

Down 4-0, the Miracle finally broke through against Cardinals starter Thomas Lee in the sixth. Aderling Mejia led off with a double into center field. A ground out by Travis Harrison to the right side moved Mejia to third. Jorge Polanco then lined a base hit up the middle to score Mejia. Following Polanco's single, Mike Gonzales and Adam Brett Walker each registered a base hit to load the bases.

Niko Goodrum delivered a soft liner into center to bring in Polanco and cut the Cardinal lead in half, 4-2.

Palm Beach returned fire four runs in the next two innings. Casey Rasmus collected a pair of RBI doubles and Breyvic Valera tripled twice, driving in a run and scoring two more.

Berrios took the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits over five innings. Mason Melotakis allowed four runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings and Madison Boer recorded a scoreless outing over 1.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Lee (2-2) earned his second win of the season with a six inning start. Lee was tagged for two runs on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

The Miracle (16-11) play the second of a three-game series at Roger Dean Stadium agains the Cardinals (11-16) on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
