June 26, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Former South Carolina Stingrays player and head coach Spencer Carbery was named the head coach of the team's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Hershey Bears Tuesday.
Carbery, 36, who spent the 2017-18 season as an Assistant Coach with the AHL's Providence Bruins, will join the Bears and work to develop prospects for the Washington Capitals.
After a four-year professional playing career, including two seasons with South Carolina and a Kelly Cup Championship in 2009, Carbery made the move behind the bench as an assistant coach with the Rays in 2010. He was then promoted to Head Coach at the start of the 2011-12 year where he remained for five seasons.
The Victoria, B.C. native left the Lowcountry to become the head coach of the Saginaw Spirit in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) prior to the 2016-17 season. Carbery departed South Carolina as the winningest coach in club history, compiling a 207-115-38 record with the Stingrays. He was also the winner of the John Brophy Award as the ECHL's Coach of the Year in 2014, and was the runner-up for the award in 2015 and 2016.
South Carolina qualified for the Kelly Cup Playoffs in each of Carbery's five seasons as head coach, and he helped guide the Stingrays to a pair of division titles, the 2015 Kelly Cup Finals and an ECHL-record 23-game win streak during the 2014-15 regular season.
The 26th season of South Carolina Stingrays hockey begins in Jacksonville against the Icemen on October 13. The Stingrays will open their home schedule vs. Greenville on Saturday, October 20.
Season tickets are on sale now! For more information or to purchase, contact the Stingrays by phone at 843-744-2248 or visit 3300 W. Montague Ave. Suite A-200 during business hours.
