Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Chris Capuano allowed a pair of solo home runs in seven innings Sunday afternoon earning his third win of the year in a 5-2 Tucson victory over Portland at PGE Park. Capuano worked out of jams in the sixth and seventh innings to collect his first Triple-A win since April 30.

Tucson's win allowed the Sidewinders to split the four-game series after losing the first two games when their losing streak reached eight games.

The Sidewinders first two runs came on solo home runs from Billy Martin and Mike Bell. The Beavers also scored their first two runs on solo shots from Mark Quinn and Rich Gomez.

Portland put two men with no outs in the sixth. Capuano got three ground ball outs to escape the threat and keep the game tied.

Tucson took the lead for good in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs Portland elected to leave left-hander Mike Bynum in to face Danny Ramirez with a right-hander available in the bullpen. Ramirez who was 1-19 this season, drilled a two-run double to push the lead to 4-2. Tim Olson would later score in the inning on a wild pitch to push the lead to 5-2.

Portland put a couple of guys on base with an error and bunt single in the bottom of the seventh. Capuano speared a line drive back to the mound off the bat off Jermaine Clark and doubled off Brian Simmons at second to end the inning.

Jeremy Ward threw the ninth for his fourth save of the year.

The Sidewinders improved to 26-35 with the win. Tucson returns home Monday to start an eight-game home stand with a four-game series against Tacoma. Paul Abbott (0-0 0.00) will make his first start of the season for Tucson. Abbott won 17 games two years ago with Seattle but is coming back from shoulder surgery. Brian Sweeney (6-4 4.40) will take the mound for the Rainiers.
