Lake County Captains News Release
(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains (59-45) won their seventh consecutive game topping the Fort Wayne TinCaps (44-62) 3-1 on a clear-skied Friday night at Classic Park.
It is the first time with seven wins in a row since 2015, when the Lake County Captains identical to this streak took three from the Great Lakes Loons and four from the Fort Wayne TinCaps.
Jack Leftwich took the ball tonight and after a challenging first inning, returned to form completing five innings. After two walks in the top of the first, half of Leftwich's total through his first five starts, the TinCaps knocked a single bringing home their lone run. The right-hander would allow just two hits over the next four, and retired the final nine he faced.
Lake County was held off the board by Jackson Wolf of Fort Wayne through the first five frames. The Captains left five on, and Wolf totaled six strikeouts, four inning-enders.
Johnathan Rodriguez would put Lake County on the board knotting up the score at one with his third home run off Wolf this season, fourth in August, and 19th of the season.
After two scoreless innings from Mason Hickman in relief and a 16-pitch top of the eighth from Matt Turner, the Captains grabbed the lead in the bottom of the eighth.
Angel Martinez began the inning with a single to right field, to extend his on-base streak to 22 games. Joe Naranjo followed that up with a line drive hit to left-center that hopped over the TinCaps centerfielder which helped Martinez to come across the plate. Alexfri Planez later in the inning lifted a high fly ball that Fort Wayne's defense couldn't locate in right-center, which became a ground-rule double and made it 3-1.
In the ninth, Elvis Jerez made his Lake County debut. Despite allowing two TinCaps to reach, Jerez ended the game with a strikeout, the eleventh for Captains pitching on the evening.
Game five of the series is tomorrow Saturday, August 13th. The first 1000 kids under 12 will receive a Captains Backpack presented by Stanley Steemer. Following the game, there will be Saturday Night Fireworks presented by Excalibur Auto Body. First Pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
Coverage of the game can be found on WJCU.org/Captains and the MiLB First Pitch app.
