Captain Brett Hyland Joins AHL's Bears on ATO

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Though his career with the Brandon Wheat Kings is now over, Brett Hyland is by no means done with high level hockey.

The Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League announced today they had signed Hyland to an Amateur Tryout Agreement. Hyland, who was selected in the 7th round of the 2023 NHL draft by the Washington Capitals (Hershey's NHL affiliate) will join the Bears for the remainder of their season.

In his fourth and final season with the Wheat Kings, Hyland was named captain in February after the team had traded captain Nate Danielson to the Portland Winterhawks. When the time came to name a new captain, his fearless, hard-nosed style, experience, and scoring touch made Hyland an obvious candidate.

"He's a guy that exemplified what we want the Wheat Kings to be," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "A blue collar, hard worker who's going to give it his all every night. I remember when I first came here last year in the fall and you see the guys on the ice for the first time, he's a guy that just stood out to me with his work ethic and the way he played the game."

As it turned out, Hyland had only just started standing out. In his final season of junior hockey, he posted new career highs in every statistical category, and led the Wheat Kings in goals with 31 and points with 59. He went on to post five points in four playoff games, tying for the team lead in postseason scoring as well.

The Hershey Bears are currently first in the AHL with 105 points and have secured both a playoff spot and their division title. They have five games remaining in their regular season schedule.
