Edmonton Capitals News Release
Yuma, AZ - The Edmonton Capitals have now won four of five games against the Yuma Scorpions thanks to a pair of victories on Monday during their second straight night playing a double-header. The Caps won both shortened seven-inning games by 8-6 scores at Desert Sun Stadium, following up on Sunday's double-header split.
The Caps actually trailed the Scorpions 5-1 after the first inning of the first game, but they quickly redeemed themselves with two runs in the third and four more in the fourth en route to the 8-6 win. Shortstop Enrique Cruz was the offensive star for Edmonton, going 3-for-4 with a home run, five RBI and one run scored, while second baseman Matt Rogelstad also had three hits, scored three runs and drove in one run.
Starting pitcher and former MLB veteran Albie Lopez earned the victory, as he pitched five innings and surrendered six runs, but only one of those runs was earned as the Caps' defence committed a pair of errors. Closer Bartolome Fortunato earned his third save in three days with a perfect seventh inning.
Despite the Caps battling back from a 5-1 deficit to win the first game, the second half of the double-header was much more memorable, as the Scorpions' starting pitcher was none other than former MLB all-star, World Series champion and American League MVP Jose Canseco. The infamous slugger is Yuma's player-manager who occasionally pitches as well, but the Caps scored six runs on him through three innings to go up 6-0.
Canseco and his twin brother Ozzie were then ejected from the game, which spurred the Scorpions to come back and close the gap, but the Caps held on to win by two. Cruz came up big once again with two hits, two runs and two RBI, while centre fielder Todd Linden hit a home run and drove in three runs, and Rogelstad had two hits and scored three runs.
The Caps (15-9) and Scorpions (7-16) return to playing nine-inning single games on Tuesday and Wednesday to close out the series. The teams then head north back to Edmonton on Thursday to open a four-game series at TELUS Field. The series opener is another Thirsty Thursday presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House and 100.3 The Bear, featuring $3 beer.
The upcoming home series with the Scorpions also includes another edition of Saturday Night Movies presented by 96.3 Capital FM and Herbers Autobody & Repair, featuring a Simpsons marathon starting with "Homer At The Bat," which includes Canseco and multiple other former MLB stars.
Saturday's game is also Taylor Hall Bobblehead Night, presented by Herbers Autobody & Repair, with free bobbleheads of the Edmonton Oilers sniper for the first 500 fans at the game.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Season seats start at less than $9 per seat. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
