'Caps Advance to Canadian Championship Final With 2-1 Win

Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC recorded a 2-1 victory against York United FC in the semifinals of the Canadian Championship on Wednesday evening at BC Place.
The 'Caps created multiple opportunities early on, but were unable to convert.
Arguably the best chance of the first half came when midfielder Russell Teibert's through ball found Ryan Gauld down the left flank in the 25th minute. Gauld then crossed in a ball to Brian White, who's header went just off target.
The second half began with the 'Caps scoring the opening goal early. Ryan Raposo's one-time volley bounced off the near post, but White then followed up on the rebound from close range to make it 1-0 in the 53rd minute of the match.
Minutes later, York United FC were given a free kick right outside the box in the 62nd minute. Diyaeddine Abzi's curled shot was strongly parried away by goalkeeper Cody Cropper.
As the match progressed, the 'Caps found their second goal. Gauld's cross on the left side of the field connected to White inside the area once again. The striker then got his left foot to the ball to redirect it into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage in the 73rd minute.
With time running out, York responded with a late goal. Substitute Mouhamadou Kane's short pass was placed to midfielder Isaiah Johnston, who showed some nifty footwork in the box and struck a low shot to cut the lead in half in the 84th minute of the match.
In the end that was as close as York would get, as the 'Caps closed out a 2-1 win.
The Blue & White are now set to host Toronto FC at BC Place in the final of the Canadian Championship in late July, with the date and time to be confirmed.
Whitecaps FC continue their June home stand with a clash against Eastern Conference side New England Revolution this upcoming Sunday, June 26 with kickoff set for 5 p.m. PT. For tickets, visit whitecapsfc.com/tickets.
