May 21, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
The most successful season in Madison Capitols history comes up two wins short of a Clark Cup Championship after Sioux City claims game 4 in overtime, 2-1.
A goalie battle for the entire night, Sioux City broke the scoreless deadlock 11:40 into the 3rd period. While on the power play, Luke Mittelstadt came up clutch once again burying a loose puck out front to equalize the game at 1-1 with 5:59 left in regulation.
5:48 into the extra frame, Sioux City was able to hold the zone and move the puck back down low as Nick Pierre beat Simon Latkoczy who had nothing short of an incredible performance in tonight's elimination game. Latkoczy made 35 saves tonight including multiple game saving stops.
The Capitols, who won just 12 games in the 2019-20 season and then didn't play the following year due to COVID-19, recorded their most successful season in franchise history during the 2021-22 campaign.
"We have a lot to be proud of," Capitols head coach Tommy Upton said. "We exceeded expectations and created a winning culture here. These guys set the bar extremely high for future teams which is a great thing. This team committed to do everything the right way this season. They committed to working hard on the ice and in the weight room and doing the right things away from the rink. Those are all things that they committed to this year and that's why I'm damn proud of them."
The Capitols had a season of many firsts. They clinched their first Clark Cup Playoff berth. They set a new franchise record for regular season wins. Became Eastern Conference champions and made the Clark Cup Finals all for the first time in franchise history.
The Capitols will return to action in the 2022-2023 season.
