GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Madison Capitols (19-18-1-2, 41 pts.) stormed back from a 3-0 deficit, scoring eight of the game's final nine goals en route to an 8-4 win over the Chicago Steel (19-18-1-3, 42 pts.) Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Cade Borchardt notched a career-high four points (2-2-4) for the Capitols.
Steel left wing Blake McLaughlin opened the scoring 11:49 into the game, jamming Derek Daschke's rebound from the top of the crease past Madison netminder Joey Lamoreaux. Samuel Bucek doubled the lead for Chicago five minutes later, receiving a sensational centering pass from Nick Abruzzese and sending a backhand shot past Lamoreux's blocker. The Steel outshot the Capitols by an 18-6 margin in the first period.
Chicago defenseman Matteo Pietroniro increased the lead to 3-0 early in the second period, firing a patient shot from the left point past the stick side at 1:29.
But the Capitols recorded the next six goals of the game, including four in the second period. Anthony Callin (7:57), Borchardt (11:57), Alec Broetzman (14:23) and Borchardt again (17:16) scored to give Madison a 4-3 lead at the second intermission.
Capitols right wing Kamil Sadlocha scored the eventual game-winner at the 1:23 mark of the third period, sending a shot from the right wing past Steel netminder Oskar Autio's blocker. Verners Egle added to the lead at 14:50, putting the Capitols up by three by cashing in on a Michael Mancinelli rebound.
Chicago rookie Robert Mastrosimone knocked in a rebound just 16 seconds later to notch his 12th goal of the season.
Egle scored again at 16:06, firing a one-timer from Ludvig Stenlund, then Reid Pabich recorded his first career USHL goal at 19:23, recording the game's 12th and final goal.
The Steel outshot the Capitols 42-37. Chicago went 0-for-1 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. Lamoreaux finished with 38 saves for his second victory of the season.
Fans were treated during the first and second intermissions to the Steel's first annual Wiener Dog Races, with Monty, a one-year-old dachshund born in Denver, beating 16 other dogs to earn the championship trophy, edging out fellow finalists Asti, Buster and Tarragon.
