Madison Capitols News Release
Madison, WI- The Madison Capitols (21-20-10) begin a weekend homestand on Friday at the Alliant Energy Center as they welcome the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (35-16-0) for the final time in the 2014-15 season. First face off is set for 7 p.m.
The game marks the last of six regular season meetings between the Eastern Conference foes. Cedar Rapids has won three of the first five matchups, including the past two at The Stable, 2-1 in a shootout on March 6 & 4-1 on March 14.
The two clubs have split the prior two matchups at the Coliseum, with Cedar Rapids spoiling the Capitols' home opener, 5-3 on Oct. 18 before Madison exacted some payback in a 5-1 win on Dec. 19.
Madison has dropped the last two games after picking up a pair of wins in succession over Bloomington and Des Moines on March 8 and March 13, respectively. Darren Smith has been hot in net for Madison, turning aside 93.1% of shots against him in the last five games. Unfortunately, the Barrie, Ontario native has been saddled with three tough-luck losses in that stretch.
The Capitols' power play has been a strength of late for head coach Luke Strand. The man-up unit has struck in each of the last five games, mostly thanks to Haralds Egle, who has scored in four of his last five games to propel himself to the Madison lead in goals with 16. Eight of Egle's goals have come on the power play.
With nine games remaining in the regular season, Madison sits 10 points back of the last two playoff spots in the East, occupied by Muskegon and Dubuque. Despite the ground to gain, the good news for the Capitols is that five of their last nine games are against Muskegon and Dubuque.
