Capitals Recall Burakovsky and Volpatti from Hershey

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Washington Capitals have recalled center Andre Burakovsky and left wing Aaron Volpatti from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Volpatti, who had been assigned to Hershey on a long-term injury/illness exception conditioning loan, will return to the Capitals' injured non-roster list and long-term injury list.

Burakovsky, 19, has appeared in 26 games with the Capitals this season, registering 13 points (four goals, nine assists) and six penalty minutes. The Malmo, Sweden, native made his NHL debut on Oct. 9 against Montreal and scored his first NHL goal in the first period. Burakovsky became the 13th player in Capitals history to score his first NHL goal in his first NHL game and is one of just seven players in franchise history to score a goal in his NHL debut and season opener. Burakovsky ranks tied for fifth among NHL rookies in assists this season and tied for eighth in points.

Burakovsky appeared in two games with Hershey this season, making his AHL debut on Dec. 19 at Lehigh Valley. Burakovsky registered 87 points (41g, 46a) in 57 games with the Erie Otters (OHL) in 2013-14. He was named the OHL Player of the Month for March after tallying 24 points (12 goals, 10 assists) in 12 games during the month and recorded a league-high plus-22 rating. The 6'3", 198-pound center finished March on a seven-game point streak that included five multi-point games. Burakovsky led Erie to the best regular-season record in franchise history (52-14-2-0, 106 points) and finished the season ranked ninth in the OHL in goals (41), tied for sixth in power-play goals (15), third in game-winning goals (10) and tied for eighth in plus/minus (+46).

Volpatti, 29, has missed 27 games with Washington this season with an upper-body injury. The Revelstoke, B.C., native scored two goals and registered 49 penalty minutes in a career-high 41 games with the Capitals last season. Volpatti has recorded seven points (five goals, two assists) and 137 penalty minutes in 112 career NHL games with Vancouver and Washington. Washington claimed Volpatti on waivers from Vancouver on Feb. 23, 2013.

The 6'1", 203-pound left wing appeared in three games with the Bears this season. He tallied 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) and 97 penalty minutes in 64 career AHL games with Manitoba and Hershey. Volpatti appeared in 123 games with Brown University (NCAA) from 2006-10, registering 62 points (32 goals, 30 assists) and 236 penalty minutes. He was named to the ECAC All-Academic team in each of his first three seasons and served as captain during his senior season.
