WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Mike Green, a first-round draft pick of the team in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, to a three-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Green, who will turn 20 on Oct. 12, was the Capitals' third first-round pick in 2004, 29th overall. He has played four full seasons and part of a fifth with the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League (WHL) and was named to the WHL East first all-star team in 2004-05. Green led all WHL defensemen and finished tied for 19th in the league in scoring last season with 66 points (14 goals, 52 assists). His 52 assists were tied for third in the league (with fellow Capitals prospect Eric Fehr, who signed a contract with Washington July 28), and Green's plus/minus rating of +36 was tied for fourth in the league. He had 105 penalty minutes and led the Blades to a 37-23-6-6 record, good for second in the East Division.

The 6' 1", 198-pound native of Calgary, Alberta, first joined the Blades for seven games as a 15-year-old in 2000-01, recording two assists. He had 172 points (37 goals, 135 assists) in his 267-game WHL career.
