New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The Capitales have won their fourth straight Can-Am Championship title, scoring eight late runs en route to their eventual 10-3 win, taking the series four games to one.
For the Jackals, it's their second straight Can-Am Championship loss to the Capitales.
The coldest conditions at Yogi Berra Stadium this season foreshadowed a colder eighth inning.
A three-run rally put New Jersey up 3-2 in the top of the eighth inning, but Jonathan Malo's two-run home run off Isaac Pavlik leapfrogged Quebec back on top 4-3. Josue Peley added a two-run home run later in the inning off closer Keith Cantwell to extend the lead to 6-3.
Pavlik takes the loss. After nearly blanking the Capitales in game one, he allowed five runs, four earned, off eight hits. Pavlik struck out seven and did not walk a batter in his season finale.
Scoreless into the top of the third, Josh Colafemina lead off with a double and eventually scored on a Jonathan Malo sacrifice fly. Rene Leveret's RBI single later that inning gave Quebec the early 2-0 lead.
That score held until the bottom of the seventh. With runners on the corners and two outs, Carlos Guzman ripped an 0-2 double just inside the line at third off side-winding lefty Tony Davis. One run scored easily, but Matt Cusick came too far around third and was caught in a rundown. The third baseman Malo chased down Cusick homeward, but dropped the ball when he tried to tag him with the ball in his bare hand, giving the Jackals a gift run and tying the game at two.
Following a Matt Nandin intentional walk, Chris Henderson doubled to give New Jersey a 3-2 lead.
The two Quebec home runs a half-inning later quickly drained the air out of Yogi Berra Stadium. Their four runs in the ninth inning solidifying their fourth straight title.
Davis allowed one run off two hits in relief of starter Jeff Duda, but earns the win in his only decision of the postseason.
The Can-Am League's Pitcher of the Year Jeff Duda allowed two runs off just one hit in 6 2/3 innings to earn the no-decision. Henderson's sixth inning single broke up his no-hitter.
Strangely, Henderson broke up a no-hitter in the sixth inning with a line drive to shallow left center two times this series, ending Gelinas' no-hit-bid in game 2 with a sixth-inning single. Tonight, he was the only Jackals player with a two-hit game, responsible for 67% of his team's total hits Monday. He was 4-10 this series.
Bryan Sabatella was 0-1 with two walks, ending the season on a 32-game on-base streak.
The Can-Am's batting champion Rene Leveret was 3-5 with three RBIs and three walks in his season finale.
After dropping the first game of this series, the Capitales reeled off four straight wins, outscoring New Jersey 19-6 in the final four games.
The Capitales win their fourth straight Can-Am title and fifth in franchise history, winning five of the 12 Can-Am Championships issued since the league's inauguration in 2005.
