San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
Jose Canseco was in San Diego for the first time since being traded to the Long Beach Armada after spending just one game with the Surf Dawgs. Canseco was 1-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, two walks and two strikeouts as the Armada defeated the Surf Dawgs 9-5 at Tony Gwynn Stadium tonight. Chris George (1-6) took the loss while Justin Ramsey (6-2) picked up the win for the Armada
Things started off well for the Surf Dawgs in the first inning and it started when Seth Pietsch reached on an error by first baseman Jeff LaRue. Guerra followed with a walk and after Adman Mandel flew out Scott Goodman, who was 2-for-3 with a run scored, walked to load the bases. Joey Huskins would reach on the second error of the inning by the Armada defense and Pietsch scored to make it 1-0 San Diego. Matt Maloney continued the inning by smacking a single through the right side to score two more and it was 3-0 Dawgs. Then when Tony Garcia lined out to short, the shortstop attempted to double off Matt Maloney but threw the ball away, allowing Huskins to score. After one inning, the Surf Dawgs led 4-0.
After that the Armada began to peck away at the Dawgs four-run lead. In the top half of the second, two walks to start the inning came back to haunt George as both runs would score to cut the lead in half.
In the third, Randal Shelley hit a towering home run to left field to pull Long Beach within one. The Armada would tie it in the fourth when Jeremy Hernandez scored on a David Ramirez ground out.
Long Beach would take the lead for good in the fifth when Ryan Stevenson tripled to right field and scored on the Matt Maloney error all in the same play.
Neither team would score again until the eighth inning when the Armada put up three in the top half off of reliever Mike Leishman to make it 8-4. The Dawgs countered with one in the bottom half but then Long Beach put up one in the ninth to once again lead by four.
The series with Long Beach (5-7) continues tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. PT. San Diego (6-5) will send Jake Meyer (2-2) in search of his third victory for 2006.
