Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Malquin Canelo tied a season-high with three hits on Tuesday, but the Yankees used a five-run first inning to power past the Threshers 11-3 at Bright House Field.
Canelo would finish 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including an opposite-field double in the ninth.
Tampa (33-19) struck quickly in the series opener, sending ten men to the plate in the first against Shane Watson (0-2).
With two out and two runs home, Jake Skole broke it open with a bases-clearing double to right field, putting the Threshers in an early 5-0 hole.
Mitch Walding collected the first hit of the ballgame for Clearwater (30-21) in the second inning, working an eight-pitch at-bat before driving a double to deep right-center off Chance Adams.
An out later, Canelo came through on a two-strike pitch, lining a single into left field to plate Walding with the Threshers first run.
Adams (4-0) earned the win after holding Clearwater to a run on two hits across 5.1 innings, matching a career-high with eight strikeouts. In three starts against the Threshers this year, the right-hander has permitted only two runs while striking out 24 batters in 19 innings.
Down 7-1 in the seventh, Clearwater loaded the bases with three straight hits against reliever Joey Maher.
Walding, Gabriel Lino, and Canelo all singled, and Cord Sandberg brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to center for his 15th RBI of the year.
Tampa continued to tack on, after a pair of one-out walks opened the door to a four-spot against Alberto Tirado in the eighth.
Zach Green kicked off the bottom of the ninth inning by driving a double to the right-field warning track, and after Walding's deep fly ball to left resulted in the first out of the frame, Lino walked and Canelo brought Green home with a two-base hit of his own.
Maher then walked Sandberg, but induced the final two outs to earn his first save, having worked the final 3.2 innings in relief.
The brief two-game set concludes on Wednesday afternoon, with a noon first pitch at Bright House Field. Ranfi Casimiro (5-3) takes the hill opposed by lefty Josh Rogers (1-3), and the game can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 11:45 a.m.
