Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - The Sioux Falls Canaries rallied from a late 3-2 deficit to beat the Kane County Cougars 4-3 in 10 innings on Saturday night in front of 6,747 fans at Northwestern Medicine Field.
Kane County (16-16) held a 3-2 lead over the Canaries (10-22) entering the ninth inning. Against Cougars closer Logan Nissen, Robby Barham drew a walk to lead off the inning. After two straight outs and a Kona Quiggle walk, Jabari Henry ripped a double into the left field corner to score Barham and tie the game at three, before Quiggle was thrown out at home to end the inning.
In the top of the 10th, the Canaries started the frame with Henry at second against Cougars' reliever CJ Carter (0-3). With two outs in the inning, Shamoy Christopher doubled down the right field line to score Henry and make it 4-3. In the bottom of the 10th, Sioux Falls closer Riley Ferrell recorded three straight groundouts to close out the ballgame and earn his fourth save.
Sioux Falls took an early lead against Cougars' starter Jose Fuentes in the top of the first. Wyatt Ulrich led off the ballgame with a single before Osvaldo Marinez walked to put runners at first and second. Following a pair of strikeouts, Gavin LaValley lined a single into left field, scoring Ulrich to make it 1-0. The Canaries added another run in the top of the second on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Jabari Henry to push the lead to 2-0.
The Cougars got on the board against Canaries' starter Joey Pulido in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Nick Anderson drew a walk before stealing second base. Then, Steve Lombardozzi lined a single into left field to score Anderson and make it a 2-1 ballgame.
Kane County took the lead in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runs. Alexis Pantoja led off the frame with a single before he was bunted to second by Galli Cribbs Jr. and reached third on a fly out by Cornelius Randolph. With Pantoja at third, Dylan Busby grounded a ball to third base, but an errant throw from Gavin LaValley allowed Pantoja to score and Busby to reach first. The Cougars added another run on a Jimmy Kerrigan RBI single to go ahead 3-2.
Prior to the late drama, Cougars' starter Jose Fuentes earned a quality start. The right-hander tossed six innings and allowed just two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts against four walks. Stevie Ledesma (2-1) earned the win for the Canaries by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
