Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Canaries embarked on a 13-game road trip today, but there will still be plenty of baseball at the Birdcage while the Canaries are away.
The Sioux Falls Canaries, in partnership with the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Association, are proud to host the 81st annual South Dakota State Amateur Baseball Tournament, August 7-18, presented by First Premier Bank and Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital. The event features 40 teams from across the state competing in two classes for a state championship.
"We are thrilled to help host this event," Canaries CEO/President Tom Garrity said. "The tournament has a rich history and a proud tradition. We know amateur baseball is an important part of our state's culture."
The tournament begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 7, at Sioux Falls Stadium, when top-seeded Wynot takes on Wessington Springs in the 32-team Class B bracket. On top of the eight-team Class A bracket is Renner, featuring talent local to the Sioux Falls area, including former Canaries slugger Juan Thomas ("The Large Human"). The first round games for Class A takes place in Rapid City, S.D., and the final six tournament games will be at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Class A champion will be determined at 12 p.m. on Sunday, August 18, and the Class B championship is at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 18.
Tickets for a tournament session (two games), are $8 each for adults and $5 for kids. Children age five and under are free. Canaries season-ticket holders can purchase discounted session tickets for just $5. Tickets are available through the Canaries box office.
The Canaries wish to thank several sponsors who are making this event possible: East River Electric, First Premier Bank, Gateway Casino and Lounge, Hot Stuff Pizza, Midcontinent Communications, Schoenemann's Lumber and Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital.
