Canada Tops Latvia to Advance to Semis at Under 18 World Championships

Western Hockey League talent took over at the 2019 IIHF U18 World Championship Thursday, powering Canada into the semi-finals of the tournament with a 3-1 win against Latvia.

Captain Peyton Krebs (Okotoks, Alta. / Winnipeg ICE) scored twice, including the game-winning goal and the empty-net goal to make it 3-1 late in regulation.

Scoring first for Canada in Thursday's contest was Braden Schneider (Prince Albert, Sask. / Brandon Wheat Kings), who later picked up an assist on Krebs' empty-net goal for the multi-point performance.

Taylor Gauthier (Calgary, Alta. / Prince George Cougars) stopped 38 of 39 shots in the victory. Brayden Tracey (Calgary, Alta. / Moose Jaw Warriors) and Connor Zary (Saskatoon, Sask. / Kamloops Blazers) picked up the other assists for Canada.

Canada will face the host Sweden in the semifinal with Russia and the United States of America meeting in the other semifinal.
