Can-Am League Game Recaps
Published on July 4, 2011 under Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Rockland 5, Newark 3
Boulders C Scott Clement had just one of his club's 11 hits Monday night. But that one hit proved to be the difference maker. With the bases loaded and his team trailing 3-2 in the fifth, Clement singled in Sean M. Smith and Cristobal Santana to bring his season RBI, tripling his season total in that category. The Boulders went on top early, but a but a three-run fourth spurred by a Pat Biserta solo home run gave Newark a one-run lead. Boulders starting pitcher Jonathan Velasquez earned his second win of the season after allowing three runs in seven innings on four hits with five strikeouts.
Pittsfield 1, Brockton 0
The Colonials and Rox combined to register only nine hits while 14 plate appearances ended in strikeouts. If not for a second-inning solo home run from Pittsfield 3B Johnny Welch, the game could have lasted well into extra innings. Welch joined Scott Knazek and Rafael Cabreja in the bottom half of the Pittsfield lineup as the only Colonials to pick up hits. Each reached base safely just once, as the only three hits starting Rox pitcher Freddy Flores surrendered, diametrically opposed to his nine strikeouts. But despite the strong performance, the one-run Welch blast proved to be Flores's undoing, with the combination of starter Patrick Moran and reliever Matt Lyons shuting out Brockton while allowing just six hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Moran earned his fourth win of the season in a strong eight-inning performance with Lyons picking up the save in the ninth.
Quebec 4, Worcester 1
After falling behind 1-0 to Worcester in the fourth, Quebec answered the call and put up two runs in back-to-back innings to, cruising to a 4-1 win. The final two runs came via a Patrick D'Aoust home run that also brought home Jeff Helps from third. Both D'Aoust and Robert Wagner went 1-for-4 with two RBI for the Capitales. Worcester earned its fourth-inning run when 3B Mark Minicozzi singled in 2B Abraham Nunez. It was Minicozzi's only hit of the night. Capitales starting pitcher Bryan Rembisz allowed one run on five hits to pick up the win for Quebec.
